Effective integration of business strategy with organizational and information systems (IS) strategies is critical for organizational success. The alignment ensures that organizational activities, goals, and technological investments work synergistically to achieve competitive advantage and operational efficiency. According to Dent (2002), a well-articulated business strategy provides the foundational framework within which IS strategies are developed, ensuring that technological initiatives support the overarching organizational goals. For instance, if a company's business strategy emphasizes cost leadership, its IS strategy must focus on streamlining operations and reducing technological expenses to maintain cost competitiveness. Conversely, misalignment can result in resource wastage and strategic failure, as was evident in my previous employer where IT failures adversely affected customer experience, ultimately harming the company’s reputation and strategic positioning.
Research indicates that successful firms prioritize the alignment of their business, organizational, and IS strategies, ensuring that decision-making in organizational design, technology procurement, and human resource practices consistently support business objectives (Robert & David, 2005). For example, a company pursuing a differentiation strategy might invest in innovative technologies that enhance customer engagement, providing a competitive edge. Conversely, organizations lacking strategic alignment face internal conflicts, such as investing in expanding workforce capacities despite a strategic focus on downsizing, leading to operational dissonance and reduced performance (Zhang, 2011). Achieving strategic fit requires continuous review and realignment to adapt to changing market dynamics and organizational priorities.
