3.1 Discussion: Devotional Reflection - Children of Light - Transparency Getting Started: If you are a follower of Christ or even just beginning to look at the Bible, you will see throughout Scripture, we are called to be honest. This transparency allows us to come alongside each other in encouragement and accountability. Without transparency, we would not know how to truly encourage one another, to point each other in the correct direction, or to be challenged in our own ways. Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to: Examine the importance of openness in faith and the workplace.

Background Information: In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul instructs believers to contemplate the stark difference between darkness and light. The command sharing the truth, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” is expressed by Paul (Ephesians 5:8). He is telling us because we are children of light, we are to act and live in ways that are good, right, and true. We should separate ourselves from and expose any deeds of darkness (Ephesians 5:13). Remember back to the very beginning. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light, and God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:1-4, NIV). God does not just create the light or give light to something. He is light (1 John 1:5). As a Christian, we not only get to enjoy God’s light, we get to become His light, children of light, to a very dark world. We should separate ourselves from the darkness and live as His children of light.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10, NIV).

Embracing the Light: A Personal Reflection on Living as Children of Light

In the journey of faith, acknowledging the contrast between darkness and light is fundamental. As a follower of Christ, I recognize that my life is called to reflect the light of Jesus in both my personal life and my workplace. This reflection explores how I am actively separating myself from sinful habits, the areas I tend to hide, and ways I can better illuminate the love of Jesus to others.

First and foremost, I have made conscious efforts to separate myself from behaviors and thoughts that foster darkness. For example, I have committed to daily prayer and scripture reading to renew my mind and heart. Ephesians 5:8-10 emphasizes the importance of living as children of light, which involves goodness, righteousness, and truth. By immersing myself in God’s Word, I am better equipped to identify and resist temptations that could lead me into darkness. Additionally, I have sought accountability partnerships within my church community to provide encouragement and correction when needed. These actions help me to stay transparent and honest about my struggles, aligning with the biblical call to be open about my spiritual journey.

However, despite these efforts, there are still areas I find myself hesitant to disclose fully. One such area is my tendency toward impatience and harsh words during stressful situations. I tend to keep this struggle somewhat hidden because I fear judgment or disappointment from others. Yet, I understand that transparency is vital in fostering genuine relationships rooted in trust. This prompts me to ask God for grace and strength to admit my faults openly, knowing that His light can transform even the darkest corners of my heart.

Living in a dark world, I recognize my calling to shine the light of Jesus through my actions, words, and attitude. At work, I aim to exemplify Christ’s love by demonstrating patience, kindness, and integrity. This not only influences my colleagues but also serves as a testament to the power of God’s light working through me. I believe that small acts of compassion—such as listening attentively or offering encouragement—can illuminate the love of Jesus profoundly. Moreover, I intentionally seek opportunities to share my faith and how Jesus has changed my life with colleagues who are curious or searching.

To improve in illuminating Jesus’ love in my workplace, I plan to become more intentional about praying for my coworkers and seeking natural opportunities to share my faith story. I also want to be more mindful of my words and reactions, ensuring they reflect the light of Christ. This involves practicing patience, humility, and kindness consistently, even amidst challenges. By doing so, I hope to create an environment where others can see firsthand the transformative power of Jesus’ love. In doing this, I embrace the biblical call to be a light in darkness, shining brightly as a reflection of the Savior’s love and truth.
