During my practicum experience, I focused on psychotherapy with individuals, drawing significantly from nursing and counseling theories. The nursing theory selected was Roy's Adaptation Theory, while the counseling theory applied was the Structural Family Theory. This reflection will chronicle the integration of these theories into my practice and my growth through the practicum.

Roy's Adaptation Theory

Roy's Adaptation Theory regards individuals as biopsychosocial beings who engage with a constantly changing environment. An adaptation model highlights the significance of coping skills in dealing with stressors. As stated by Smith and Parker (2015), the theory's purpose is to promote adaptation across four modes, ultimately contributing to individuals' health and quality of life. This perspective underscores the nursing responsibility of facilitating positive adaptation in patients.

I found that utilizing this model during my patient interactions increased my awareness of the holistic nature of patient care. By integrating Roy's Model, I was able to recognize my patients’ bio-psycho-social needs and develop nursing interventions that addressed these complex interactions comprehensively.

Structural Family Theory

The second theory applied was Structural Family Theory, developed by Salvador Minuchin, which emphasizes the importance of family dynamics in the therapeutic process. The theory posits that a family operates within a larger social system, and its organization directly influences individual behavior. Understanding family roles and relationships guided my interactions with patients and their families, allowing me to facilitate more effective communication and conflict resolution (Wheeler, 2014).

This theoretical framework significantly impacted my approach to family therapy sessions. By assessing family structures and boundaries, I could design interventions that addressed dysfunction, promoting healthier interactions within family units. For example, working with families revealed underlying issues such as miscommunication and role confusion, which we then addressed in our sessions.

Goals and Objectives of the Practicum

For my practicum experience, I established three primary goals: to gain pertinent experience, improve my confidence in task completion, and enhance patient confidence in their healthcare experiences. Correspondingly, I outlined specific objectives aimed at achieving these goals. These included understanding the planning of nursing care, reflecting on nursing practices, and developing a comprehensive nursing care plan (Thompson, 2016).

Achieving these goals required commitment and adaptability. I actively engaged in patient care tasks, progressively building confidence. With the preceptor’s support, I navigated challenges and enhanced my competencies in clinical decision-making, ultimately fostering growth in my nursing practice.

Practicum Timeline

The practicum timeline was structured to facilitate thorough observations and engagement. In my first week, I shadowed multiple sessions, starting with a bio-psychosocial assessment of a patient. Through this experience, I gained insight into the complexities of patient evaluation and intervention.

On the second day, I participated in a group session focused on cognitive behavioral therapy. Though I experienced initial anxiety, the support from my preceptor helped me overcome these feelings, allowing me to engage fully in the process. This progressive exposure enabled me to build my confidence and practice essential communication skills (Wheeler, 2014).
