The process of developing a research inquiry begins with clearly defining its purpose. In my case, the research aims to explore the impact of remote learning on community college students’ academic success and engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose is to understand how sudden shifts to online education affected students’ motivation, participation, and overall educational outcomes. Identifying these effects is essential to inform future educational policies and improve online learning methodologies for diverse student populations.

The rationale for this research stems from the need to address gaps in understanding the lived experiences of community college students amidst unprecedented educational disruptions. As articulated in Ravitch and Carl (2016), a strong rationale should delineate the significance of the study and its potential contribution to educational practice (p. 65). Given that community colleges serve a diverse demographic, examining students’ perspectives provides insights into designing equitable digital learning environments. The rationale also emphasizes the importance of peer-reviewed evidence that highlights how the shift to remote modalities intensified disparities related to technology access, socio-economic status, and support systems (Adedoyin & Soykan, 2020).

Issues of positionality are critically relevant in qualitative research because they influence the research process and interpretation. As a researcher, I recognize my position as an educator and a researcher with a vested interest in equitable online education. My background and assumptions could shape data collection and analysis, especially since I have observed varying student experiences during remote learning. Acknowledging my positionality involves being reflexive about potential biases and remaining open to participants’ diverse viewpoints. This awareness ensures that the research remains transparent, credible, and ethically sound, aligning with the principles outlined in Mauthner and Doucet (2003).

The research question guiding this inquiry is: How has remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic affected community college students’ academic engagement and success? This question directs the investigation toward understanding students’ perceptions of their learning experiences, barriers faced, and coping strategies employed. Developing this question involved applying principles from the Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods to craft open-ended, exploratory questions capable of capturing nuanced student narratives (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This focus allows for a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted factors influencing student achievement in a rapidly changing educational landscape.
