Throughout my academic journey in the Bachelor of Arts in Social Justice and Criminology (BASCJ) program, I have developed a nuanced understanding of the criminal justice system, particularly in analyzing how law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections intersect and influence societal dynamics. My chosen program learning outcome (PLO 1)—analyzing criminal justice issues within these systems—has been central to my coursework and research, sharpening my ability to critically evaluate the components of the justice system through an interdisciplinary lens.
The program's curriculum emphasized the interconnectedness of the three branches of the criminal justice system, highlighting systemic strengths and weaknesses. Courses such as Criminal Law and Correctional Systems fostered in-depth comprehension of policies, procedural justice, and inmate rights. For instance, studying the disparities in sentencing illuminated how systemic biases perpetuate inequalities, inspiring me to critically assess reform initiatives (Perez et al., 2015). This coursework enhanced my analytical skills, allowing me to identify gaps and propose evidence-based solutions.
However, challenges remain in applying this knowledge professionally. One significant obstacle involves addressing entrenched systemic biases and advocating for policy reforms amid political resistance (Mauer, 2017). Additionally, navigating cultural sensitivities and resistance to change may hinder efforts to implement equitable practices. Nevertheless, my coursework has prepared me to approach these challenges critically and ethically, considering diverse perspectives and empirical evidence (Brown, 2018).
In conclusion, the program’s focus on systemic analysis has equipped me with skills vital for advancing justice reform. Future career challenges include overcoming institutional resistance and promoting culturally informed policies, but with my foundational knowledge, I am committed to ongoing advocacy and professional development to effect meaningful change.
