Recent advertisements I encountered include a television commercial promoting a new smartphone and a social media sponsored post for a wellness product. The TV ad highlighted innovative features designed to enhance user experience, while the sponsored post emphasized immediate health benefits with appealing visuals. Both ads aimed to influence purchasing decisions, using persuasive language and compelling imagery to attract attention and evoke desire.

Regarding whether these advertisements were manipulative, I believe some elements could be considered manipulative. The smartphone commercial used aspirational visuals that associated the product with modernity and social status, subtly encouraging viewers to buy not just a phone but a symbol of success. Similarly, the wellness product social media post employed before-and-after images with exaggerated claims of effectiveness, potentially misleading consumers about the product's actual benefits. While these tactics are common in advertising, they raise ethical concerns about exploiting consumers’ emotions and insecurities to drive sales, thus exhibiting manipulative strategies.

In the context of online manipulation, scholars like Susser, Roessler, and Nissenbaum argue that it is inherently harmful, regardless of its specific outcomes. I agree that online manipulation poses significant ethical challenges because it infringes on individual autonomy and manipulates preferences without explicit consent. Manipulative practices can diminish trust in digital platforms, distort perceptions, and influence behavior in ways that undermine democratic processes and personal agency. While some may argue that manipulation could potentially have positive outcomes, such as raising awareness or promoting beneficial behaviors, the broader ethical implications and potential for abuse suggest it is fundamentally harmful. The power imbalance and lack of transparency inherent in manipulative techniques justify the view that online manipulation should be scrutinized and regulated to prevent misuse.

Susser et al. propose four strategies to mitigate online manipulation: curtailing digital surveillance, problematizing personalization, promoting awareness and understanding, and attending to context. An additional approach might involve implementing stricter regulatory frameworks that enforce transparency in algorithmic processes and data usage. Transparency ensures that users are informed about how their data is collected and utilized, empowering them to make conscious choices, potentially reducing the effectiveness of manipulative tactics.
