The internship experience described herein provided a comprehensive opportunity to evaluate the value of practical work exposure in relation to academic learning. My internship proved to be highly worthwhile, offering not only practical skills but also insights into the functioning of real-world business processes and technology systems. Reflecting on the experience, it became evident that the skills acquired during the internship significantly complemented my coursework and prepared me for future professional challenges.

One of the most notable aspects of my internship was the acquisition of new computer science skills. The practical exposure to systems like SharePoint design for ticket management, cloud services (SaaS), networking including IP address subnetting, firewalls, Windows server management, Hyper-V, VMware, and NAS storage provided a breadth of technical knowledge. In particular, working with SharePoint design and cloud services deepened my understanding of enterprise collaboration tools and cloud-based infrastructures, which are critical in contemporary IT environments (Smith & Johnson, 2020). Furthermore, the hands-on experience with NetSuite ERP system enabled me to understand enterprise resource planning from an administrative perspective, including order processing and master data management.

In addition to computer science skills, my liberal studies education played a vital role in my internship. Skills such as effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making were reinforced during daily interactions with team members and vendors. These liberal studies skills, cultivated through coursework in communication and ethics, proved essential when managing third-party vendors and collaborating within a team setting. For instance, addressing client concerns and ensuring compliance with ethical standards required application of this foundational knowledge (Brown, 2019).

Among the computer science skills learned at college, some proved especially beneficial during my internship. For example, the knowledge of network administration, including subnetting and firewall configuration, directly supported tasks such as remote user support and network management. Similarly, understanding system virtualization with Hyper-V and VMware allowed for effective management of server resources and provided a basis for troubleshooting issues in virtual environments. These skills enhanced my ability to contribute actively to IT infrastructure maintenance and support activities (Jones, 2021).

Despite the valuable learning, there were additional skills I wish I had acquired at college that would have further enhanced my internship performance. Specifically, a deeper understanding of .NET MVC software programming would have been beneficial in analyzing and improving business processes. This programming knowledge would have allowed me to suggest or implement custom solutions to streamline workflows and increase efficiency (Lee, 2022). Such skills are increasingly vital as many business applications rely on web frameworks like .NET MVC to develop scalable, maintainable software systems.

My primary job duties involved NetSuite ERP administration, support, order management, and master data management. I also served as a network administrator overseeing network operations and security, providing in-office and remote user support, managing third-party vendors for various software solutions, and testing new systems prior to deployment. Analyzing existing business processes and recommending improvements was a core component of my role, contributing to operational efficiency and effectiveness.

In fulfilling my responsibilities, I completed all assigned duties successfully, ensuring system functionality and supporting business operations effectively. Collaboration with team members was a significant part of my experience; I was actively involved in team projects and daily meetings. Interaction problems were minimal due to effective communication strategies and clearly defined roles, although occasional misunderstandings required resolving through open dialogue and professional courtesy (Miller, 2018).
