Introduction The video “Becoming a Leader: What is Leadership” is an interesting and fun presentation by Richard Rierson. Rierson is a former Marine, commercial pilot, entrepreneur and certified leadership coach and trainer. He believes that leadership challenges include learning how to meet our personal challenges with calmness, confidence and consistency. He covers many topics related to leadership in this 12-minute video. Initial Post Instructions Watch the video on “What is leadership?” and answer the following questions: Would the authors of our course textbook agree with what is said in the video? (e.g. Would they be in agreement with the video’s definition of leadership?) Be specific. Is there anything in the video that was not discussed in class that called your attention? If so, explain. After watching the video and studying the materials for this week, would you say leadership is important? If it is, how so? If it is not, why not?

Leadership is a multifaceted concept that encompasses a variety of qualities, skills, and behaviors aimed at influencing others toward achieving common goals. The video “Becoming a Leader: What is Leadership” by Richard Rierson offers an engaging exploration of leadership as a personal journey involving calmness, confidence, and consistency in facing challenges. To determine whether the authors of our course textbook agree with Rierson’s perspective, it is essential to analyze the core definitions and theories of leadership presented in the textbook. Typically, scholarly definitions emphasize attributes such as influence, vision, integrity, and the ability to motivate others (Northouse, 2018). These elements are consistent with Rierson’s emphasis on confidence and calmness, which are vital traits in effective leadership. However, Rierson places significant focus on personal resilience and emotional regulation—areas that may not have been given explicit attention in our textbook, but are increasingly recognized in leadership research as crucial for navigating complex environments (Goleman, 2013). Hence, there is a general alignment between Rierson’s depiction and academic perspectives, although the emphasis on personal emotional mastery might be more prominent in Rierson’s presentation.
One aspect in the video that caught my attention, which was not discussed extensively in class, concerns the importance of self-awareness and emotional regulation as foundational leadership skills. Rierson highlights that leadership is not solely about authority or position but about the inner qualities that enable effective influence. This reframes leadership from a purely external or positional concept to an internal, self-managed process. This insight complements current leadership models like emotional intelligence (EI), which stress the importance of self-awareness and self-regulation in effective leadership (Goleman, 1990). While class discussions may have touched on leadership traits and behaviors, Rierson’s emphasis on internal emotional control and personal challenge management adds a valuable dimension to understanding leadership's holistic nature.
From my perspective, leadership is critically important in every societal domain—business, politics, education, and community service—because it determines the effectiveness of collective efforts and the realization of shared visions. Effective leadership fosters motivation, drives innovation, and can adapt to rapid changes in the environment (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). Without strong leadership, organizations often struggle with direction, morale, and resilience. In today’s complex and interconnected world, leadership is more vital than ever because it guides individuals and groups through uncertainty and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Moreover, cultivating leadership qualities in oneself and others enhances organizational sustainability and societal progress. Therefore, I believe that leadership is indispensable for achieving personal, organizational, and societal success.
