Responsibilities to the Profession (Powerpoint presentations and discussion) The purpose of the discussion this week is to explore the nurse’s responsibilities to the profession. As outlined by the ANA Code of Ethics, the professional nurse has an obligation to support the profession in a variety of ways. *Note: Post your Power Point presentation into the Discussion Board and enter the Organization name into the Subject of the Discussion Board. Then respond to two classmates presentations with chosen organizations different than you own. 1-Discuss what you think your responsibility is to the profession? 2- Do you think that you have been upholding this duty? 3-Do you currently belong to any professional organization? Why or why not?What new organizations did you learn about as you viewed other student’s PowerPoint presentations? Did any of the organizations provide you with new information? 4-Which organizations are you interested in joining? The responsibilities of nurses to their profession are deeply rooted in ethical principles, professional standards, and a commitment to ongoing development. According to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, nurses have an obligation not only to deliver competent care but also to advocate for the profession, uphold integrity, and contribute to the advancement of nursing knowledge and practice. My personal responsibility to the profession includes maintaining high standards of patient care, continuous education, and active participation in professional organizations. Upholding these duties ensures that I contribute meaningfully to the nursing field and uphold the trust placed in us by society and our patients.
Reflecting on whether I have upheld these responsibilities, I believe I have consistently worked toward maintaining competency through ongoing education, certifications, and staying current with best practices. However, I recognize that there are opportunities to be more active within professional organizations that promote leadership and advocacy. In my experience, remaining engaged in professional development and advocacy helps reinforce my commitment to the profession and supports the collective efforts to elevate nursing standards. As a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), I am committed to aligning my actions with the ethical principles they promote, but I also acknowledge the need for active participation beyond mere membership.
During my review of other students’ PowerPoint presentations, I learned about various organizations like the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN). These organizations provide unique resources and advocacy opportunities for specific populations and global health issues. Some organizations highlighted initiatives focused on diversity, health equity, and policy advocacy, enlightening me about areas I had not previously explored in depth. These insights have inspired me to consider new avenues for involvement, particularly in organizations that emphasize social justice and health disparities.
Personally, I am interested in joining organizations such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. These groups offer advanced educational resources, leadership opportunities, and a platform for networking with professionals dedicated to excellence in nursing. Engaging with these organizations will enhance my professional growth and allow me to contribute more effectively to the nursing community. Overall, actively participating in professional organizations is vital for personal development and for fostering a culture of excellence and advocacy within the profession.
