Develop your self-assessment by reevaluating your skill in The 7 Competencies of Effective Communication by Engleberg and Wynn (2015) by circling or highlighting your current level. For each narrative section in Part 1, simply state your growth, such as “I moved from average to good”; you do not need to fully reflect on each category again. Part B is the area that requires the most attention for this revisited assignment. Be sure to provide a detailed summary of your growth, drawing from what you learned in tracking your goal progress.

Reflecting on the initial self-assessment conducted at the beginning of this course provides invaluable insight into my development in communication competence. My journey over the duration of the course has been characterized by meaningful growth, particularly when evaluated through the lens of the Seven Competencies of Effective Communication as outlined by Engleberg and Wynn (2015). These competencies include listening, speaking, nonverbal communication, persuasion, written communication, intercultural communication, and ethical communication. By systematically re-evaluating and highlighting my current proficiency levels within each of these areas, I observe notable enhancements aligned with my personal and academic goals.
Initially, my self-assessment indicated that I was at an average level in most competencies. For instance, in listening skills, I marked myself as progressing but still with room for improvement. Over the course of the semester, I consciously practiced active listening strategies, such as providing verbal acknowledgments and paraphrasing the speaker’s message, which significantly improved my listening skills from average to good. Similarly, my verbal communication skills, especially in presentations and class discussions, evolved from a tentative to a more confident and persuasive stance. I made deliberate efforts to hone my clarity, tone, and delivery to engage my audience more effectively.
Particularly in nonverbal communication, my awareness and application of body language, facial expressions, and gestures have improved markedly. I learned that nonverbal cues significantly influence interpersonal interactions; therefore, I intentionally used eye contact and open gestures to facilitate better rapport with peers during group activities, progressing from basic awareness to more intentional and effective use. In terms of persuasion, I initially struggled to present compelling arguments; however, through targeted practice and studying persuasive techniques, I advanced from developing weak arguments to confidently presenting well-structured points supported by evidence.
Furthermore, my written communication skills have seen substantial growth. Beginning the course with a tendency toward vague and verbose writing, I now craft clearer, more concise, and well-organized written reports and essays. This progress stems from feedback received on earlier assignments and my dedication to practicing revisions, which improved my ability to articulate ideas logically and effectively.
Intercultural communication has also been a significant area of growth. Initially, I demonstrated basic awareness of cultural differences but lacked depth in understanding how cultural contexts influence communication styles. Through coursework and interactive discussions, I developed greater cultural sensitivity and adaptability, enhancing my ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Ethical communication was an area where I started with limited understanding but now recognize the importance of honesty, integrity, and respect in all communication contexts, both personal and professional.
Part B of the assignment highlights the area requiring most improvement: ethical communication. Although I have made progress, I acknowledge that my understanding and application of ethical principles in communication still need strengthening. I plan to further study ethical frameworks and consistently reflect on my communication practices to ensure they align with professional standards.
Regarding my initial goals, I aimed to improve my active listening, enhance persuasive speaking, and develop greater intercultural competence. I am pleased to report significant progress in all three areas. My active listening has become more attentive, allowing me to understand others more deeply. My persuasive speaking has improved through practice and studying rhetorical techniques, leading to more compelling arguments. Additionally, my intercultural awareness has expanded through exposure to diverse perspectives, fostering more respectful and effective intercultural exchanges.
The relationship between course learning and my growth is evident. The readings, assignments, and class discussions provided practical frameworks and opportunities for reflection, enabling me to apply theoretical concepts to real interactions. For example, understanding nonverbal cues from coursework directly influenced my improved body language during presentations. Moreover, learning about cultural differences helped me navigate intercultural conversations more confidently, demonstrating how the course content has directly contributed to my communication development.
In conclusion, this self-assessment reveals that my communication skills have markedly advanced across multiple competencies. My deliberate practice, course engagement, and reflective activities have been instrumental in this journey. While I recognize areas like ethical communication still require focus, I am motivated to continue refining my skills beyond this course. Future efforts will involve ongoing practice, feedback, and learning to sustain my growth in effective communication.
