The PBS special "PS Dance" offers an insightful exploration into the diverse world of dance, its careers, and its profound benefits for students. This documentary highlights how dance is not just an art form but also a viable career path, fostering skills such as discipline, creativity, and cultural appreciation. Reflecting on this, my ultimate goal in the dance world would be to become a professional choreographer. This role excites me because it allows for artistic expression while influencing and inspiring others through movement and storytelling. Choreography combines creativity with technical expertise, and it offers opportunities to work in various settings, including stage productions, film, and community outreach programs.

Beyond the careers mentioned in the chapter, several other dance and dance-related careers come to mind. These include dance therapy, which uses movement as a healing tool for individuals with physical or emotional challenges; dance journalism, where one reports on dance performances, trends, and industry news; dance consulting, offering expertise to productions or educational programs; and dance faculty or instructors in higher education, teaching and mentoring future dancers. Each of these careers emphasizes the multifaceted nature of dance and its application in different fields, further showcasing its versatility as a profession.

The benefits of dance for students from kindergarten through 12th grade are extensive. Dance promotes physical health by enhancing flexibility, strength, and coordination. It fosters cognitive development by improving memory, focus, and spatial awareness. Additionally, dance enhances social skills through collaborative performances and fosters self-confidence as students perform and express themselves publicly. It also encourages cultural understanding by exposing students to diverse dance styles from around the world, thereby promoting inclusivity and social awareness. These benefits collectively contribute to the overall development of well-rounded, confident individuals.

My response to the PBS Dance special has been transformative in understanding the depth and scope of dance as both an art form and a career. Before watching, I viewed dance mainly as a form of entertainment or physical activity. However, understanding the dedication, innovation, and cultural significance behind dance has broadened my perspective. My appreciation for dancers’ artistry and physicality has deepened, and I now see dance as a powerful medium for storytelling, cultural exchange, and personal growth. The special has inspired me to pursue dance with greater respect and curiosity, recognizing its potential to impact individuals and communities positively.

Regarding how my view of dance has changed since the beginning of the semester, I can confidently say that my perception has evolved from viewing dance as solely a form of entertainment to recognizing it as a serious discipline with artistic, educational, and therapeutic dimensions. Initially, I saw dance as superficial or simply a hobby; now, I appreciate its complexity, discipline, and societal significance. This change stems from learning about various dance styles, historical contexts, and career pathways, as well as witnessing the dedication of professional dancers.

To maintain dance as a consistent part of my life after this course, I plan to incorporate regular physical activity that includes dance elements, such as attending local classes or workshops, practicing at home, or participating in community dance groups. I aim to keep exploring different styles of dance to sustain my interest and challenge myself physically and artistically. Additionally, I will continue to educate myself about dance history and contemporary practices, which will deepen my understanding and appreciation of the art form. Engaging with dance as a lifelong interest will help me stay connected to the discipline and its many benefits, including improved physical health, emotional well-being, and cultural awareness.
