Students Name Psyc 3338 Midterm Fall 2023aging In Movies Review the
There is a plethora of films out there depicting various dimensions of the aging process. Despite the belly-laughing, or sometimes, tear-jerking emotions we gather from these films, we often do not stop to wonder if these depictions of various dimensions of aging are accurate or a bunch of malarky (i.e., nonsense). For this assignment, you are tasked with watching a film, not a TV show, of your choice that depicts any aspect of aging that has been discussed in our class. After watching the film, answer the questions below.
Paper For Above instruction
Movie title: Give your review a title. It can be as funny or as serious as you would like.
1. Give a brief summary of what the movie is about. (2-4 sentences)
The film chosen for this review is "The Father," which illustrates the experience of aging through the perspective of an elderly man suffering from dementia. The story focuses on his life, relationships, and the emotional toll of cognitive decline. It highlights the confusion, dependency, and emotional struggles faced by older adults with memory impairments. The film powerfully portrays the subjective experience of aging with cognitive impairment and the impact on loved ones.
2. Who is/are the main character(s) in the film that you will be discussing? (1-2 sentences)
The main character discussed is André, an elderly man experiencing progressive memory loss and cognitive decline, whose perspective drives the narrative. His daughter, Anne, also plays a significant role as she supports and manages his care.
3. What class topic does the movie depict? How? (2-4 sentences)
The movie depicts the topic of cognitive aging and dementia, illustrating the processes and emotional impact of neurodegenerative diseases in older adults. It demonstrates the challenges faced by individuals with dementia, including memory loss, confusion, and personality changes, aligning with course discussions on cognitive aging and neurocognitive disorders. The film portrays these aspects compassionately, emphasizing both the psychological and social dimensions of aging with dementia.
4. Based on what you have learned thus far in the course, do you feel that this film provides an accurate depiction of aging and/or the various aspects of aging? (i.e., mental/physical health, relationships, challenges, disease, wisdom, personality, etc.) Why or why not? Include at least 2 scholarly citations to support your answer. (5-7 sentences)
The film "The Father" offers a highly accurate depiction of cognitive aging and dementia, capturing the subjective experience of those living with neurodegenerative diseases. The emotional intensity, confusion, and personality changes portrayed align with research findings on dementia's progression (Alzheimer’s Association, 2023). It underscores the importance of understanding patients’ perspectives, which is often overlooked in clinical settings. Studies have shown that movies like this can raise awareness and empathy around aging-related cognitive disorders (Wiggins et al., 2020). However, while the film effectively illustrates cognitive decline, it may oversimplify the biological complexity and variability of aging processes (Morris et al., 2014). Overall, it provides a compelling and reasonably accurate visual narrative of the mental health challenges faced by aging individuals with dementia.
5. In what ways do you believe that this film could improve to provide a more accurate depiction of this dimension of aging? (5-7 sentences)
Although "The Father" vividly depicts the emotional and cognitive facets of dementia, it could improve its accuracy by incorporating more diverse experiences of aging. The film primarily focuses on advanced dementia, but early stages and varying types of cognitive decline could be more thoroughly illustrated to show a broader spectrum of aging trajectories (Petersen et al., 2018). Including perspectives from caregivers of different backgrounds might provide a more comprehensive picture of the social and cultural factors influencing aging and mental health (Gordon & Beattie, 2021). Additionally, portraying interventions such as medication, therapy, and support systems could educate viewers about available treatments and management strategies. It might also highlight the importance of preventive lifestyle factors that can influence cognitive aging, such as physical activity and social engagement (Livingston et al., 2020). Such enhancements could make the depiction more holistic and informative, fostering better understanding and preparedness among viewers.
6. All movies teach a lesson (theme/moral). What did you learn from this one? (3-4 sentences)
This film taught me the importance of empathy and patience when caring for individuals experiencing cognitive decline. It highlighted that aging, especially with diseases like dementia, is a deeply personal and emotional journey for both the individual and their loved ones. The story reminded me of the value of dignity, compassion, and understanding in facing life's inevitable changes. It emphasized that aging is a complex process deserving respect and support rather than stigma or neglect.
