Identify, research, and present (in both written and oral formats) a topic in engineering that is currently the focus of ongoing (within the past 5 years) research, investigation, and/or development. The topic must come from the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenges for Engineering. Select two different NAE Grand Challenges for this project—one for the written portion and another for the presentation, with different due dates.

For the written memo, include the following information:

  1. List the NAE Grand Challenge selected.
  2. Provide a short paragraph describing the selected NAE Grand Challenge, including:
    • How it relates to engineering (which fields).
    • Why it is important.
  3. List two journal articles or conference papers you will analyze (upload both to your learning platform). For each:
    • Use proper IEEE citation format.
    • Indicate whether it is a journal article or a conference paper.
  4. Create a table with the following information:
    • Web Searching:
      • Describe keywords used to search for background information or methods addressing the challenge.
      • List any website citations found that you plan to cite in your paper, using IEEE style.
    • Library Catalog Search:
      • Describe keywords used to find relevant books.
      • List relevant books found, cited in IEEE style, that will be used as sources.
    • Compendex Search:
      • Describe keywords used to find research articles.
      • List at least two research articles with IEEE citations, which have typical research sections (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion).
