A survey conducted in 2013 involving 1,463 parents revealed that many children utilize tablets, smartphones, and follow television programs regularly, underscoring technology's influence on childhood development.

Children gain various skills and knowledge through technology, benefiting from the shift from analogue to digital systems. Many parents provide children with mobile devices and computers for gaming, education, and recreation, facilitating positive development when used appropriately. However, technology also poses certain risks; excessive or unmanaged use can lead to detrimental effects on children's physical, psychological, and social health. Therefore, it is crucial for parents and guardians to regulate and monitor children’s use of technology to maximize benefits and minimize harms (Rowan, 2014).

The educational sector has significantly benefited from technological advancements. Increased access to the internet and affordable digital tools have helped diminish literacy gaps, especially in early education. Globally, many children are introduced to computers at young ages, sometimes as early as grade one. However, this is not universal, especially in underdeveloped countries, where children often lack access to these resources. Technology has revolutionized learning by providing vast amounts of information and educational materials, fostering critical thinking and research skills. Such exposure enables children to explore their interests, develop career aspirations, and become more literate (Druin, 2012).

Furthermore, technology enhances extracurricular activities that promote health and well-being, such as digital fitness programs and health tracking applications, contributing to children’s holistic development. Communication is another critical area where technology has made a substantial impact. Mobile phones and messaging platforms facilitate interaction with family and friends, fostering interpersonal skills. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram provide platforms for children to express themselves, share ideas, and engage in discussions, supporting social skill development and cultural awareness.

Entertainment technologies also influence children’s cognitive and emotional growth. Television shows, movies, and online series stimulate imagination, creativity, and predictive reasoning, encouraging children to think beyond simple boundaries. Engaging with morally oriented films and motivational videos can instill virtues and responsible values, contributing positively to character development. These media sources also serve as educational tools that inspire and motivate children to pursue moral and responsible behaviors (Allday, 2013).

Despite these benefits, the adverse effects of technology on children’s development are increasingly evident. A primary concern is neglect by parents, who often prioritize digital entertainment over direct engagement with their children. Excessive screen time can hinder meaningful interactions, leading to a lack of emotional bonding and poor upbringing. Many children grow up in environments where supervision and guidance are insufficient, increasing their vulnerability to negative influences and risky behaviors. Over-reliance on technology can also lead to physical health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and posture problems, particularly in countries like the United States and Canada, where screen time is extensively high (Allday, 2013).

Moreover, technological overexposure can impair mental health and developmental milestones. Children excessively exposed to the internet may develop behavioral issues such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and sensory processing disorders. The prevalence of addictive behaviors linked to digital devices manifests through habits like incessant chatting, gaming, and screen obsession. This overuse hampers academic performance, social interactions, and physical health. Detailed studies have shown that children spend an average of 7.5 hours daily on media consumption, with many having televisions in their bedrooms, which exacerbates health issues like visual impairment and sleep disturbances (Kaiser Foundation, 2010).

Furthermore, access to inappropriate content, including pornography and violent media, poses serious risks. Exposure to such materials can lead to early sexual activity, mistaken beliefs about gender roles, and mental health problems. The internet's unregulated nature makes it a source of harmful content that, if unchecked, can distort children's perceptions and moral judgment. Consequently, technology’s dark side can hinder emotional stability and social development, emphasizing the need for vigilant supervision (Rowan, 2014).

In conclusion, technology is an indispensable component of contemporary children's development, offering opportunities for learning, communication, and entertainment. Nonetheless, the potential adverse effects demand active parental involvement and responsible usage policies. Parents must set boundaries, promote balanced engagement with digital devices, and foster offline relationships to ensure children benefit fully from technological advancements while safeguarding their health and moral development. As technology continues to evolve, ongoing research and proactive parenting are essential to harness its positive potential and mitigate its risks in shaping well-rounded, healthy future generations.
