The final assignment for this course is an academic research article critique. The critique aims to develop your ability to read and critically assess research reports for applications in your own research, understanding social problems, informing public policy, or refining individual research approaches. You will select one journal article from a provided list related to your discipline, read it carefully, and analyze its strengths and weaknesses across various sections: introduction, methodology, results, and discussion. Additionally, you will evaluate the significance of the research findings in a concluding section. The critique must be comprehensive, approximately 8 to 10 double-spaced pages, and formatted according to APA style. It must include a title page, a references page, and cite at least two scholarly sources.

The purpose of the critique is to ensure that you know how to read and critically assess research for use in your own research, to understand social problems in society, support decision making in public policy, or to influence one’s own individual research approaches. Focus of the Final Paper Reading and critically analyzing academic research reported in journal articles is an important part of learning and applying scholarly research for multiple applications within your discipline. Through the first four weeks of this course, you have become more familiar with the various components of research design. For this final assignment, read and critically review one of the journal articles provided in the list by discipline (below).
You may choose from any of the lists, however, you will probably find one from your own discipline to be of greater interest to you and more useful for future reference. Carefully select one article from the provided options across disciplines such as Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Military Studies, Social and Criminal Justice, Social Science, and Sociology. After choosing your article, read it thoroughly and analyze it critically using the methods outlined in the Learning Commons resource on critique writing.
The critique should encompass the following sections:
- Introduction (about two pages): Summarize the article, including the purpose of the study, the methodology employed, the findings, and the author's conclusions. Use questions from the “Analyze the Text” section of the Learning Commons resource to guide your summary. Include the full APA citation for the article in your references.
- Body (about five pages): Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each section of the article—introduction, methods, results, discussion, and overall structure. Use questions from the “Evaluate the Text” section of the Learning Commons resource to frame your critique.
- Conclusion (about three pages): Discuss the significance of the research findings, the potential implications for practice, policy, or future research, and the overall contribution of the article to its field. Employ questions from the “Establish the Significance of the Research” section of the resource.
Formatting and submission guidelines include:
- Length of 8 to 10 double-spaced pages, excluding title and references pages.
- APA formatting style.
- A title page with the paper’s title, your name, course info, instructor’s name, and submission date.
- Citation of at least two scholarly sources in addition to the article itself.
- A complete references page in APA style.
