The purpose of this assignment is to create lessons that use quality children’s literature as a foundation for the skill, strategy, or content you will be teaching. While some classrooms still rely on textbooks as the primary text source for content area or ELA instruction, many districts have made the move away from textbook-centered curriculum to a curriculum that is instead built on quality pieces of children’s literature. For this assignment, create a reading-focused lesson plan that is based on quality pieces of children’s literature meant to enhance student learning while engaging all types of diverse learners. Complete Parts 1 and 2 below.

Part 1: Lesson Development
Develop your lesson plan using the Lesson Plan Template. Include the following components in your lesson plan:
- Central Focus of Lesson: Choose a K–8 grade level for your reading-focused lesson. Select a quality piece of children’s literature that is considered multicultural (refer to pp. 22–32 in Literature and the Child for guidance). Ensure the book is used as the focal point of the lesson, integrated throughout to teach lesson objectives, rather than just part of an assessment.
- Learning Objectives: Write at least three objectives for the lesson, including one that addresses multicultural education.
- Materials: List all materials, including the book, technology integration plans for research, instruction, practice, assessment, or adaptive devices, and supports for diverse learners (individual or group).
- Instructional Approach:
- Prior Knowledge: Describe how you will activate students’ prior knowledge and make connections to the lesson.
- Instruction (I do): Detail step-by-step modeling procedures for the lesson.
- Guided Practice (We do): Describe group activities that allow students to practice and apply skills collaboratively.
- Independent Practice (You do): Outline individual activities for students to practice and apply the lesson independently.
- Supports: Specify supports for students based on individual/group needs, including adaptations for diverse, racial, cultural, gender, and social class backgrounds, students with IEPs or 504 plans, and gifted learners.
- Closure: Explain how the lesson will be concluded with a culminating activity or task.
- Assessments: Create one formative and one summative assessment aligned with the lesson goals.
Part 2: Reflection
Write a reflection of 150–200 words discussing your process in selecting and incorporating multicultural children’s literature into your lesson plan. Address the following questions:
- What challenges might teachers face when selecting quality multicultural children’s literature?
- Explain how literature can promote understanding of diversity and multiple perspectives.
- Describe your plan for regularly integrating children’s literature into your classroom instruction.
- Discuss strategies for ensuring your lessons and classroom library include culturally diverse literature.
