Inhalation is the process of drawing air into the lungs, wherein oxygen is transferred to the alveoli—tiny air sacs that provide an extensive surface area for gas exchange. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts, creating negative pressure that pulls air into the lungs. Conversely, exhalation involves the expulsion of air from the lungs, removing carbon dioxide from thebody. The lungs are encased within the pleura, a double-layered membrane that reduces friction and allows smooth movement during respiration. A pulmonologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats diseases related to the lungs and respiratory tract. Conditions such as emphysema, a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), impair airflow and cause difficulty breathing, known as dyspnea. Pneumonia, an infection of the lung tissue, leads to inflammation, accumulation of fluids, and impairments in gas exchange, which can be life-threatening if untreated. Understanding the structure and function of the alveoli, along with the role of the pleura, helps in diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions effectively.
The process of digestion begins once food enters the gastrointestinal tract, initiating a complex series of muscular and chemical processes. Peristalsis, the wave-like contractions of the digestive muscles, propels food forward through the alimentary canal. The small intestine, comprising the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, is central to nutrient absorption. The duodenum is the first section, where chyme is mixed with digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver. The jejunum follows, primarily involved in absorbing nutrients, while the ileum completes the absorption and passes the remaining material to the large intestine. A gastroenterologist is a specialist who diagnoses and treats disorders of the digestive system, such as hepatitis—a condition characterized by inflammation of the liver that can be caused by viral infections, alcohol abuse, or autoimmune diseases. An appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is performed in cases of appendicitis, a potentially life-threatening inflammation. Diverticulitis, another common condition, involves inflammation or infection of diverticula—small pouches that form in the colon wall. Proper functioning of the digestive system relies heavily on coordinating peristalsis and local immune responses, ensuring nutrient absorption and waste elimination occur efficiently.
