This Week Were Working On Introductions You Will Read Mary Mebanes

This week we're working on introductions. You will read Mary Mebane’s “The Back of the Bus,” which begins on p. 157 in The Norton Sampler, and form some conclusions about the introduction of Mebane's essay. You will also write a paragraph describing your own experience in transportation and then respond to a peer’s posted paragraph on his/her paragraph. Post 1: Answer both sections A & B in your initial post.

A. After reading Mebane’s story “The Back of the Bus”: How do paragraphs 1 & 2 introduce the story? How does the author set historical context (cite specific example from the story)? How does the author set emotional context? (cite specific example from the story).

B. “Taking a Ride”: In one paragraph (5 – 7 sentences) describe a ride you have taken on a bus, train, plane, boat, or other vehicle. Focus on the vehicle itself and the people who were there with you.

Paper For Above instruction

In her essay “The Back of the Bus,” Mary Mebane effectively employs the introductory paragraphs to establish a compelling tone and context that draws readers into her narrative. Paragraphs 1 and 2 are instrumental in setting both the historical and emotional landscape of her story. Specifically, Mebane begins by immersing the reader in a vivid description of the bus and the social environment of segregation, which immediately situates the story within a specific historical period characterized by racial segregation and discrimination in the United States. For example, she describes the segregated seating and the “back of the bus” as a symbol of racial division, which succinctly introduces the historical context of racial segregation (Mebane, p. 157). These opening paragraphs also develop the emotional context by highlighting the feelings of unfairness, shame, and resistance experienced by those who endured segregation. Mebane’s tone conveys both the injustices faced and the resilience of individuals who challenged systemic racism. Her evocative language fosters empathy and underscores the significance of this period in American history.

Similarly, in my own experience with transportation, I recall a ride on an airplane that left a lasting impression on me. The aircraft was a modern, sleek vehicle designed for comfort, with rows of plush seats and large windows that offered breathtaking views of the clouds and distant landscapes. I traveled with a group of classmates, and the atmosphere was mixed with excitement and anticipation. Passengers around us ranged from families returning home to business travelers focused on their work. The flight attendants moved efficiently through the aisles, serving drinks and snacks, creating a sense of routine and comfort. The shared experience of navigating through the skies fostered a feeling of unity and adventure among us as we headed to our destination. This ride not only transported us physically but also emotionally connected us through the collective journey and the shared awe of flight.
