Engaging in a cultural interview provides a profound avenue for understanding the diverse fabric of human societies and cultivating intercultural competence. For this assignment, I selected a close family friend, Maria, a 45-year-old woman who immigrated to the United States from Mexico ten years ago. I chose her because of her rich cultural background and willingness to share her experiences. The interview was conducted in person at her home, providing a comfortable and undistracted environment conducive to open dialogue. I prepared a series of open-ended questions designed to explore her cultural traditions, migration experience, and perceptions of identity, emphasizing respectful listening and empathy throughout our conversation.
The interview revealed numerous insights into Maria’s life and culture. She shared that her native language is Spanish, which she still speaks at home and within her community, highlighting the importance of language preservation in maintaining cultural identity. She described vibrant holiday traditions such as Día de los Muertos, which she continues to celebrate with her family, emphasizing foods like pan de muerto and cultural stories passed down through generations.
