When an individual runs on a treadmill, multiple responses are orchestrated by the nervous system to support movement, cardiovascular regulation, and muscular activity. Firstly, the central nervous system (CNS), comprising the brain and spinal cord, processes sensory feedback from muscles, joints, and the cardiovascular system to adjust stride, maintain balance, and regulate breathing rate (Karim et al., 2020). For example, proprioceptors in muscles and joints send signals via sensory neurons to the spinal cord, where interneurons relay information to motor neurons that control skeletal muscles, exemplifying nervous control over muscle tissue. Additionally, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates cardiovascular responses, such as increasing heart rate and blood vessel dilation, to meet the metabolic demands of running (Gao et al., 2019). These involuntary responses maintain oxygen delivery and waste removal in tissues. The tissue types controlled by the nervous system during running include skeletal muscles, which move the limbs; cardiac muscles, which adjust the heart rate; and smooth muscles in blood vessels, which regulate blood flow. This integrated response ensures efficient physical performance and metabolic homeostasis. Overall, the nervous system's coordination of neural signals to musculature and organs exemplifies its vital role in supporting dynamic activities like treadmill running.
