For this assignment, I selected two artists I had not previously listened to: Valerie June and Anderson .Paak. The songs I explored were "Work I’ve Done" by Valerie June and "Come Down" by Anderson .Paak. The links to the performances are as follows:

Valerie June’s performance of "Work I’ve Done" was soulful and intimate, blending folk and blues influences. The performance featured a solo acoustic guitar accompanied by June’s expressive vocals, which conveyed a sense of authenticity and emotional depth. June’s demeanor was relaxed but passionate, engaging the audience through her genuine delivery. The music’s style was rooted in folk and blues, emphasizing storytelling and emotional resonance. The melodic structure and lyrical content resonate with listeners who appreciate heartfelt, acoustic-driven music. Personally, this style differs from the more produced pop music I usually listen to, but I appreciated its raw authenticity and depth, which evoke feelings of nostalgia and introspection.

Anderson .Paak’s "Come Down" was energetic, blending elements of funk, hip hop, and R&B. The performance was lively, with Anderson engaging with the crowd through expressive gestures and dynamic vocals. The musical style was characterized by a funky bassline, rhythmic beats, and soulful singing, embodying a fusion that is both danceable and atmospherically rich. The act of the musicians exuded confidence and charisma, creating an infectious vibe that invites participation. This music made a strong impact, energizing and motivating me through its groove and rhythm. It resembles some of the funk and hip hop I listen to regularly, but Anderson .Paak’s unique blend and modern production give it a distinctive feel that reflects current cultural trends and musical evolution.

Regarding genre definitions, folk music is traditional, storytelling-based music often rooted in community and cultural history. Ragtime is an early jazz style characterized by syncopated, lively piano compositions. Jazz features improvisation, complex harmonies, and a rich history rooted in African American communities. Rock music typically emphasizes electric guitars, strong beats, and a rebellious spirit. Pop is characterized by catchy melodies, repeated hooks, and mass appeal. Hip hop involves rapping, DJing, and the celebration of urban cultural expressions. These genres have influenced each other over time, creating hybrid styles, but they retain distinct characteristics reflecting their origins.

Contemporary standard bearers in various genres include artists like Beyoncé in pop and R&B, Kendrick Lamar in hip hop, and BTS in K-pop. These artists achieve their status through innovation, cultural relevance, and widespread influence across global audiences. They communicate various aspects of their cultures, historical moments, and personal experiences, thus shaping and reflecting the times they represent. Their success is often rooted in authenticity, technical skill, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences, establishing them as new icons in their respective genres.
