The primary distinction lies in their scope; physical barriers are specific tangible objects, while protective barriers can also include organizational procedures and policies to enhance security.

The two major categories of protective barriers are physical and administrative barriers (Doe, 2021). Physical barriers involve all physical structures created to block or restrict access, such as security fences or barriers around sensitive facilities. Administrative barriers include policies, procedures, and protocols designed to control access and enforce security measures, such as security clearances and screening procedures (Brown, 2018). Protective barriers should be established proactively, particularly during the planning stages of a facility or when vulnerabilities are identified, to prevent security breaches before they occur (Williams, 2022).
