Week 1 - Assignment EDU 372Biography of Educational Psychologist For

For this assignment, you will have to conduct your own research while also using the textbook. You will be creating an eight- to ten-slide PowerPoint presentation, not including the title and reference slides, based on one of the following educational psychologists:

  • Erik Erikson
  • Jean Piaget
  • Lev Vygotsky
  • Ruth Howard
  • John Dewey
  • Howard Gardner
  • B.F. Skinner
  • Ivan Pavlov
  • Albert Bandura
  • Jerome Bruner
  • Benjamin Bloom
  • Maria Montessori
  • George Canady

Make sure to attach the PowerPoint presentation or include the URL in your assignment post. Your presentation must follow APA formatting guidelines and include the following:

  1. Cover slide with title, name, course name, and date. (This slide will not count towards the eight- to ten-slide requirement)
  2. Describe your selected educational psychologist including a brief biography of where and when he was born, his educational career, and the theory for which he is known.
  3. Indicate facts about the learning theory constructed by your educational psychologist.
  4. Explain reasons why some oppose or argue against the learning theory.
  5. Summarize whether you agree or disagree with the learning theory and explain why.
  6. Explain how the learning theory is relevant to you as a future educator. Provide at least two scenarios in the classroom to explain how you would apply the learning theory in your teaching.
  7. Your last slide should include an APA formatted list of references used to support your biography.

Be sure that these sources are also cited within your presentation. This slide will not count towards the slide requirement. Include images and at least two scholarly sources for your presentation.

Paper For Above instruction

Creating a comprehensive presentation on an educational psychologist involves delving into their biography, theories, and the practical application in future teaching contexts. For this assignment, I chose Jean Piaget, a renowned developmental psychologist whose cognitive development theory has significantly influenced education.

Jean Piaget was born on August 9, 1896, in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He displayed early interest in biology and philosophy, which later merged into his exploration of cognitive development. Piaget pursued his higher education at the University of Geneva, earning his doctorate in natural sciences in 1918. His academic career was characterized by groundbreaking research into how children develop intellectual abilities. His most prominent contribution is the theory of cognitive development, which posits that children progress through distinct stages—sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational—each characterized by different cognitive abilities.

Piaget’s theory emphasizes active learning, suggesting that children construct knowledge through interactions with their environment. He argued that cognitive development occurs through processes of assimilation and accommodation, where children integrate new information into existing mental schemas or adjust those schemas to incorporate new experiences.

However, Piaget’s theory has faced criticisms. Some scholars argue that his stage model underestimates children's abilities, suggesting that cognitive development is more continuous than discrete stages. Others believe that his research focused primarily on Western children, questioning its universality. Critics also point out that Piaget's underemphasis on social and cultural factors may limit the applicability of his theory across diverse educational settings.

Despite criticisms, I agree with many aspects of Piaget’s constructivist approach. His emphasis on active engagement aligns with modern pedagogical strategies that foster exploration and discovery in learners. I believe that providing children with opportunities to interact with their environment promotes deeper understanding and long-term retention of knowledge.

In a future classroom, Piaget’s theory could shape lesson planning and classroom management. For example, during the concrete operational stage (ages 7-11), I could design activities that involve hands-on experiments to teach mathematical concepts, allowing students to manipulate objects and observe outcomes directly. Additionally, understanding that adolescents reach the formal operational stage suggests designing problem-solving tasks that challenge their reasoning and abstract thinking skills.

Integrating Piaget's theory into my teaching philosophy encourages a developmentally appropriate and student-centered approach, fostering curiosity and active learning. For instance, setting up science experiments where students hypothesize, test, and revise aligns with the theory’s emphasis on experiential learning. Moreover, encouraging peer collaboration in problem-solving tasks supports social aspects of cognitive development, acknowledging that cognitive growth is also influenced by interaction and cultural context.
