Week 1 Discussion: Understanding Research Design And Approac
Week 1 Discussionunderstanding Research Design And Approaches Wlos
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 1 and 2 of the course textbook. This discussion will help you think about the varied research approaches and how they can be applied based on certain world views or the nature of the groups you wish to research. By choosing the best approach from the start, researchers are much more likely to get the best results to answer research questions. In your initial post, address the following: · Select a research topic that interests you and also is an important social problem. Then, use the four combinations of worldviews, designs, and research methods in Figure 1.1 of Chapter 1 of the course text to discuss a project involving your selected research topic that brings together worldview, designs, and methods.
Identify whether this would involve quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research. · Using the research project you have described above, state the essence of this study in one sentence and then write your research title. By doing this, you focus on the key elements of the study. · Explain the key elements of your proposed study: What is the social problem? Which identity group in society is most affected by this social problem? Is there a particular place or other unique aspect which is important to note about your study? · Next, list three keywords related to your topic and use these keywords to do a database search for journal articles on the topic in the Ashford University Library. Indicate the three keywords in your post and list an example of a journal article found for each key word. (Note: Each journal article found must be listed in APA format.) Indicate if you needed to adjust your keywords in order to locate appropriate journal articles for your study, and explain that process. Your initial post should be at least 550 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s), and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. In your responses, be sure to note any interesting aspects of their response, such as their worldview, social research topic and research methodology chosen. Your responses should be at replies Expand replies Subscribe
Paper For Above instruction
The focus of this discussion is understanding diverse research designs and approaches in social science research, emphasizing how the choice of worldview, methodological design, and research method influences the research process and outcomes. Selecting an appropriate research approach requires careful consideration of the social problem under study, the affected population, and the contextual factors involved. This paper examines these elements through a specific research example, integrating qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches as relevant.
For this discussion, I selected the social issue of homelessness among Veterans in urban settings. Homelessness among Veterans is a critical social problem with far-reaching implications, including impacts on health, social integration, and public policy. To analyze this issue, I employed the four combinations of worldviews, designs, and research methods laid out in Figure 1.1 of the course textbook, which includes positivist, interpretivist, transformative, and pragmatic worldviews, each associated with particular research designs and methods. For this study, I aligned with a transformative worldview, aiming to advocate for social change by understanding the lived experiences of homeless Veterans, thus adopting a qualitative research design with ethnographic and phenomenological methods.
This research approach is primarily qualitative, focusing on rich, descriptive data to understand the subjective experiences of homeless Veterans. The essence of the study is to explore how homeless Veterans perceive barriers to housing and reintegration and to provide insights for policy interventions. Therefore, the research title is “Exploring the Lived Experiences of Homeless Veterans in Urban Environments.”
The key elements of this study include addressing the social problem of homelessness, with a focus on Veterans—a population most affected by the social dislocation, unemployment, mental health challenges, and social isolation. The city of Los Angeles was chosen due to its high rates of Veteran homelessness and complex social services infrastructure, which provides a unique context for this research. This localized approach allows for nuanced understanding of urban-specific challenges and opportunities for intervention.
To deepen research understanding, I identified three keywords: “Veteran homelessness,” “urban social services,” and “mental health.” I conducted journal article searches using these keywords in the Ashford University Library. For example:
- “Veteran homelessness”: Smith, J. (2020). Challenges faced by homeless Veterans: A qualitative perspective. Journal of Social Issues, 76(3), 445-462.
- “urban social services”: Lee, A., & Carter, P. (2019). Urban social service responses to homelessness among Veterans. Social Work, 64(2), 172-185.
- “mental health”: Rodriguez, L. (2021). Mental health barriers to housing stability in homeless Veterans. Journal of Psychiatric Services, 72(4), 356-364.
While searching, I found that adjusting the keywords was sometimes necessary—for example, expanding “Veteran homelessness” to “Homelessness among Veterans” or combining keywords such as “Veterans and urban homelessness” to locate more relevant articles. This process enhanced the richness and relevance of the literature base, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the research landscape.
In conclusion, selecting an appropriate research approach aligned with the social problem and targeted population is critical for meaningful findings. Employing qualitative methods in this context enables capturing the depth of Veterans’ experiences, which can inform policy and practice to mitigate homelessness in urban environments. The integration of different worldview and research design combinations guides the research process toward impactful and actionable outcomes.
