Week 1 Writing Assignment That Catalog Description Defines The Purpose

Week 1 Writing Assignment That Catalog Description defines the purpose and goals of our class. The textbook we are using supports these purposes and goals. This first week, we are not using our textbook, although you WILL need it the second week. For our Week 1 assignment, you are to write an expository essay. Expository basically means to explain or inform – to present information about a subject.

This type of writing is based on facts, and is free of personal prejudices and beliefs – UNLESS those are backed by facts. In its simplest form, an expository essay contains:

  • Introduction, that introduces the central idea/article/subject that you will discuss in your essay
  • Main Body, where you present evidence and information. This is the main part, the ‘meat’ of the essay, and should be the longest section of your essay.
  • Conclusion, your summation and closing

The central purpose of an expository essay is to prove/support an argument or idea. As expressed in our Catalog Description, we will study business cases. For your writing assignment, you are to find a current business case, such as those discussed in the three links I have included below.

Research the topic you have chosen, NOT the article, the TOPIC. Research means locating and reading information from various websites, such as Forbes, Time, news websites, our library’s electronic resources, company websites themselves, Fortune, etc. Once you have read about and understand your topic, write an essay using the guidelines below. Your paper should consist of:

  • A current or recent business case
  • Contain the three main parts of an expository essay above
  • 1,000 words in length (that is approximately three FULL typed pages, with the last paragraph continued onto page four)
  • Double spaced, 12pt font, preferably 1” margins
  • Contain a cover page and a references/works cited page
  • Include either a header/footer with your name and page number
  • Use MLA or APA style, but choose ONE
  • Free of grammar/spelling errors

Be sure to review the Writing Assignment Rubric that is in the Course Files tab in BlackBoard. Your completed paper will be submitted through the BlackBoard link under the Week 1 folder in the Assignments tab.

VERY IMPORTANT Wikipedia is “written collaboratively by largely anonymous volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or, if they choose to, with their real identity.” (Wikipedia: About, 2015) Wikipedia is a site for general understanding, and is not a citable source. As it is not a citable source, using it as such will result in a Failing grade on that assignment. This is my class policy; your other instructors will have their own policies concerning citable and reliable sources.

Paper For Above instruction

The objective of this assignment is to craft a comprehensive expository essay centered on a current business case, adhering to academic standards and structure. An expository essay aims to explain, inform, and present factual evidence to support an argument or idea. To achieve this, students must select a recent or ongoing business case that exemplifies relevant concepts discussed in the course. The process involves rigorous research from credible sources, avoiding unreliable references like Wikipedia, and synthesizing information into a well-organized paper.

The essay must include an introduction that clearly introduces the selected business case, providing context and significance. The body of the paper should thoroughly analyze the case, presenting evidence, data, and relevant insights to elaborate on the central theme. This section should be the longest component, allowing for detailed exploration and critical analysis. The conclusion should summarize key findings, reaffirm the main argument, and reflect on the implications of the case.

Word count is targeted at approximately 1,000 words, which typically spans three pages depending on formatting. The document must be double-spaced, employ 12-point font, and use standard 1-inch margins. A cover page and a references page are essential, listing all sources used in proper MLA or APA style. Consistent headers or footers with the student’s name and page numbers should be included for clarity and professionalism.

Research activities should involve consulting reputable sources such as Forbes, Time, Fortune, corporate websites, and academic databases. Students must critically evaluate information for credibility and relevance, steering clear of unreliable sources including Wikipedia, which is not considered citable evidence in academic writing. Proper citation of all sources is mandatory for avoiding plagiarism and ensuring scholarly integrity.

Finally, meticulous editing for grammar, spelling, and formatting is necessary to submit a polished and professional paper. The assignment must be uploaded via BlackBoard under the specified Week 1 submission link by the deadline.
