As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it. The two key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance. This must not be a report on the same activity as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, if you visited the same museum for HUM 111, your HUM 112 report should focus on different works and displays.

Visit a museum or gallery exhibition, or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity should have content that aligns with our course. You will write a 2-3 page report describing your experience, including details of the event location, date attended, attendees, initial reactions, descriptions of at least two pieces, a summary of the event, and your overall reaction. You should use the class text as a reference and make connections between what you observed and what you learned in the course.

If you choose a museum, plan your visit to see exhibits from 1600 AD to the present that relate to the humanities. Focus on 2 or 3 works that interest you, contemplating their significance. If you opt for a performance, choose a college or professional-level recital, concert, or stage show that fits the course content. Dress appropriately, take notes, and avoid recording during performances.

Submit your proposed activity to the instructor for approval early, preferably before Week 5, and seek guidance on suitable options if needed. Ensure your report is typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, with 1-inch margins, and follows APA citation style. The cover page and references are separate from the 2-3 page report. Include a title, your name, instructor’s name, course title, and date on the cover page.

Paper For Above instruction

Engaging with the humanities through direct, experiential activities offers invaluable insights into cultural and artistic expressions. For this assignment, I selected a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, a renowned institution that houses an extensive collection of artworks from the 20th century to the present. The purpose was to explore the evolution of contemporary art and its connections to cultural shifts, aligning with our course objectives in understanding art's role within historical and socio-economic contexts.

The museum visit took place on October 15, 2023, during a weekday afternoon. I was accompanied by a fellow student and a museum guide. Upon arrival, I felt a sense of anticipation mixed with curiosity. The museum's modern architecture, characterized by glass facades and spacious galleries, set the tone for an immersive experience. As I entered, I immediately noticed the diversity of artworks, ranging from paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations and performance art pieces.

One of the first works that captivated my attention was Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon,” a pioneering piece of Cubism that challenged traditional perspective. The fragmentary and abstracted forms represented a radical break from classical art, reflecting the shifting societal attitudes of the early 20th century amidst cultural upheaval. The piece was displayed prominently, allowing viewers to contemplate its complex structure and provocative subject matter. I connected this to the course material discussing how modernist artists responded to the tumult of their times, using innovative techniques to express new ways of seeing and understanding the world.

Another notable exhibit was Ai Weiwei’s “Sunflower Seeds,” an installation composed of millions of handcrafted porcelain seeds. This work engaged me heavily in terms of its social commentary on mass production, individual identity, and Chinese cultural history. The meticulous craftsmanship contrasted with the overwhelming scale, prompting reflection on the relationship between individual and collective identity—topics covered in our class readings on cultural expression and socio-political influences in art.

The overall experience was intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. The museum’s curation facilitated a narrative linking artistic innovation to historical moments. Walking through the galleries, I appreciated how art serves as a mirror and mold of societal values and struggles. The activity deepened my understanding of how contemporary art evolved from earlier movements, influenced by economic upheavals, technological progress, and shifting cultural paradigms. This connection reinforced the importance of contextual analysis when interpreting artworks, as emphasized in our textbook and class discussions.

In conclusion, visiting the Museum of Modern Art provided a tangible link between theoretical knowledge and real-world cultural artifacts. The experience broadened my appreciation of modern art’s complexity and its role in societal discourse. The insights gained through this activity will enrich my engagement with future artworks and deepen my understanding of humanities as an interdisciplinary field. By integrating observations with academic concepts, I gained a more nuanced view of how culture and history shape artistic expression and vice versa.
