Week 4 - Journal Rough Draft Review Process Evaluation
Purpose: The primary goal of this weekly assignment is to enable you to understand the revision process and revise your paper with the help of a writing specialist.
Prepare: Step 1: Prepare a shortened version of your Final Paper (at least four pages) by including the following: Introduction paragraph and thesis statement you developed for your Week 3 Assignment. Background information of the global societal issue you have chosen. Brief argument supporting at least two solutions to the global societal issue. Conclusion paragraph.
Must document any information used from at least five scholarly sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper. Note that you will need at least eight scholarly sources for your Final Paper in Week 5.
Step 2: After you have completed a rough draft of your paper, submit that draft to the Ashford Writing Center. Reflect: Carefully review the summary feedback found in the email from the tutor and the margin comments that you see on your returned paper. Consider each of the suggestions provided to help you to revise your paper.
Write: What You Need to Submit to Waypoint: Upload the document that contains the feedback from the Writing Center specialist. Submit the journal assignment answering the following questions in at least 400 words: Identify the top three issues your writing specialist focused on in your rough draft (e.g., paragraph structure, proper use of quotations, thesis statement, etc.). In what ways were those issues surprising? Describe what you learned from some of the feedback your writing specialist provided as explanations. Was this feedback helpful? Evaluate the usefulness of the paper review tool. In what ways did this activity improve your academic writing skills? Will you use the Ashford Writing Center to review your work in the future? Why or why not? Identify Writing Center Video Tutorials that you find most useful and explain why. Also, identify tutorial(s) you found least useful and explain why.
The journal part of the assignment does not need to be formatted in APA style; however, correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation is required.

The process of writing and revising is integral to developing strong academic writing skills. Engaging in the rough draft review process provided by the Ashford Writing Center has been instrumental in my learning trajectory. This journal entry elucidates three principal issues highlighted by my writing specialist, reflects on the feedback provided, evaluates the overall utility of the review process, and ultimately analyzes how this experience has enriched my academic writing capabilities.
First and foremost, the three main issues pointed out by my writing specialist were related to paragraph structure, the clarity of my thesis statement, and the usage of quotations. The feedback regarding paragraph structure was particularly enlightening, as I had previously underestimated the significance of coherent and logically flowing paragraphs. My writing specialist emphasized the importance of topic sentences and how they serve as anchors for each paragraph. It was surprising for me to learn that some of my paragraphs lacked clear transitions, which might confuse the reader about how my ideas connected. This realization drove me to reevaluate my organization strategy, ensuring that each paragraph contained a clear central idea supported by relevant evidence.
Moreover, the clarity of my thesis statement was another focal point. My writing specialist noted that my thesis was too broad and lacked specific direction. This feedback was unexpected, as I believed I had presented a strong argument. However, upon further reflection, I recognized that a well-articulated thesis is paramount for guiding the reader through the ensuing discussion. As a result, I have revised my thesis statement to be more concise and focused, which I believe will aid in delivering a clearer argument in my final paper on the global societal issue at hand.
Lastly, the suggestions regarding quotation usage highlighted the need to integrate evidence smoothly into my writing. I learned from my writing specialist that simply inserting quotes without adequate context or analysis detracts from the strength of my arguments. This feedback was particularly helpful; it prompted me to practice creating lead-ins for my quotes and ensuring that each citation was followed by relevant commentary and analysis. I now understand better how to employ quotes as a means of reinforcing my points rather than allowing them to stand alone without sufficient elaboration.
The review process as facilitated by the Ashford Writing Center has proven to be invaluable in enhancing my academic writing skills. The structured feedback has equipped me with the tools necessary to address common writing pitfalls and refine my writing style. Before this experience, I had limited knowledge regarding the importance of a detailed review, and I was often hesitant to seek help. Now, having received constructive criticism, I am more inclined to utilize the Writing Center for future assignments. The reassurance and detailed guidance provided by writing specialists build confidence and clarity, making the writing journey significantly more manageable.
I also found the Writing Center's Video Tutorials particularly useful in enhancing my writing skills. In particular, the tutorials focusing on thesis construction, citation formats, and transition strategies have been instrumental. They provided step-by-step guidance, which enabled me to systematically improve my writing approach. However, I found tutorials that discussed very basic grammar points to be less useful for my current level of writing proficiency, as I have a solid grasp of basic grammar but needed support on more complex writing issues. Nonetheless, I recognize the value of these tutorials for other students who may be at different stages of their writing development.
In conclusion, the rough draft review process has positively impacted my academic writing. Not only did it illuminate areas that needed improvement, but it also provided me with the necessary resources to enhance my skills. Moving forward, I plan to continue utilizing the Ashford Writing Center and take advantage of their tutorials, as I believe that consistent engagement in such feedback-driven processes will translate to more effective and coherent writing in my future assignments.
