What is your role as a health care team member?

My role as a health care team member is multifaceted, primarily as a Telemetry nurse in a 148-bed hospital where I monitor patients’ heart activity via Electrocardiogram (ECG). I care for patients with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart failure, and kidney failure, as well as managing acute cases post-surgery, such as those following open laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, or hysterectomy. My responsibilities also include administering medications and coordinating post-discharge care.

In addition to my full-time role, I work per diem in the Emergency Department (ED). Here, my focus shifts to triage, assessing the urgency of patients' conditions, gathering their medical histories, and taking baseline vitals. Part of my treatment responsibility involves preparing medication, a practice that was new to me given my background in Telemetry. In the ED, I continually monitor patients who may require acute care or admission, often managing patients whose condition could necessitate transfer to intensive care. A substantial part of my job includes documentation and discharge processes.

Professionalism and Its Influence

I define professionalism as encompassing a range of qualities, with specialized knowledge being fundamental. Professionals must demonstrate competence, accountability, and self-regulation, particularly under pressure. A professional image is equally important; maintaining a respectful demeanor, proper attire, and punctuality are vital to leading by example. While I strive to embody these values, I acknowledge my own challenges, such as maintaining a positive attitude during extended work periods. I am committed to bettering my self-regulation to enhance my professional demeanor.

Leadership in Healthcare

I believe leaders in healthcare can indeed be regarded as stewards. The Apostle Paul’s words resonate with me: “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). This perspective helps us value all forms of life. However, embodying stewardship can prove challenging, particularly in instances where I face prejudice or disrespect from patients. In these moments, setting aside personal feelings to ensure high-quality patient care is essential, even when faced with adversity.

The Importance of Advocacy and Authenticity

It is vital for leaders to embody professional advocacy, authenticity, and the ability to wield power and influence among colleagues. A leader cannot gain respect or effectively guide others without demonstrating these traits. In our teaching hospital, I have witnessed poor leadership behaviors, such as a charge nurse who disregards professional standards and negatively impacts new nursing staff. Authentic leadership fosters trust, and without it, the connection necessary for effective teamwork and mentorship is compromised.

Contributions to My Learning

Throughout this course, I have garnered valuable insights, particularly the significance of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Understanding the multifaceted roles within healthcare and the importance of professionalism, advocacy, and authenticity will enhance my capabilities as a nurse and future leader.
