Student A(AS): What surprised me most about the readings and videos is how often the people being interviewed talk about LinkedIn and how important networking and communicating is. Although I already knew that networking is important to obtain a job, I never realized how vital of a role LinkedIn played in many applicant’s job search. Every day, more and more people struggle to find employment; if they knew all these tips and tricks about networking, job fairs, LinkedIn and researching companies they are interested in working for, then a lot of them would be employed. Personally, I have always searched for jobs locally and within my community considering I am part of a military family and do not get to choose where I get to live.
I found it easiest for me to ask around within my group of friends to see if they know of any available jobs that I may be interested in. Thankfully, I never had any issues finding a job and never needed to maintain or interact with a ton of people on LinkedIn. In the future, if I do decide to further my career outside of my current 3 jobs, then I could prepare more by attending more job fairs and connecting with different people that are outside of my friend group. During this assignment, I have learned that if I am looking to change my career path, I should update my LinkedIn profile and start connecting with people in the specific job/company that I am looking to apply for. Networking is one of the most important aspects of job hunting, as well as researching the company I am looking to obtain a job at.
Learning about the company and how it operates will help significantly when it comes to interviewing and connecting with future employers. Showing that I’ve done research about a company, and asking specific questions about the company, tells the employer that I am dedicated and serious about the job position. Keeping an open mind while job searching is critical because you might not get your dream job right away; there may be a job available that will help open new doors and lead you down the career path towards that dream job.
Student B(MH): Explain what surprised you the most about the readings and videos from this week. Why do you think you were surprised? I was a little surprised with how the speakers in the CareerQuest videos we watched had to say things that we would think everybody already knows; little things like identifying your skill sets and be prepared for the interview. I believe that these are things that are very important, but somehow applicants neglect. This just goes to show that whether we're a recent college graduate or a seasoned employee, looking for a new job can be stressful or overwhelming that we may still miss something, and that friendly reminders would help.
How would you describe your personal job search strategies? I've only had two jobs in my life so far. I usually do my research to make sure that I will love the company I am going to work for. I do my research about the company, and find out how employees feel about the organization. I do not want to waste my time and effort landing on a job that I would just have to quit after a few months. Lastly, I make sure I am ready for the interview. Discuss what you feel you need to do to prepare for your future career? Watching the videos from CareerQuest made me realize I have a long way to go. It has been a long time since I last updated my resume and had a job interview. It reminded me just how important it is to utilize online resources and company websites, customize my resume to match each position I apply.
Reflection – the students also should include a paragraph in the initial response in their own words reflecting on specifically what they learned from the assignment and how they think they could apply what they learned in the workplace. This week, I've learned that the cost of money is the amount of income that could be generated from a given amount of money if it were invested. The cost of money changes as interest rates, among other things, change. I've also learned that the market rate, interest rate at which the buyer needs to pay for the use of borrowed money, is influenced by factors such as deferred consumption, inflationary expectations, alternative investments, risks of investments and liquidity preference. Determining the meaning of the shapes of curves was also a big thing for me this week. I've also enjoyed learning about the types of bonds and their features. I will not be able to apply this at a workplace just yet, as we are getting ready to move to our next military assignment, but with the knowledge I now have through this week’s reading materials and videos, I will be able to make a more informed decision with the family’s investments.
