In my previous experience with quality improvement initiatives, several TQM tactics were employed to achieve operational excellence, primarily including designing quality into processes, implementing 5S, and applying mistake-proofing techniques.

One of the core tactics involved designing quality into processes from the outset. Instead of relying heavily on inspection phases to detect defects post-production, efforts focused on proactively building quality into each stage of the workflow. For example, in a manufacturing setting, process engineers collaborated with production staff to develop standardized procedures that minimized variability and defect rates. This approach reduces the need for increased inspection, as quality is embedded into the process itself.

Additionally, the implementation of 5S methodology was instrumental. 5S—Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain—organized the workspace to improve efficiency and reduce errors.
