The people of society have rights, the right to be free and the right to be themselves. Although it is presumed that such rights exist, it is the opposite for many of the individuals of this society. Discrimination has been a part of society for as long as one can remember. Currently, the LGBTQ community is facing discrimination.
Discrimination for being themselves, due to society being unable to look past the “traditional morals'' which has only led to hate crimes and abuse. One should not have to go to court to face issues against using the restroom. One should not be discriminated against due to their gender-identity by the individuals of its own society. Transgender individuals face immense backlash for their identities. They struggle to be accepted by society as individuals of the identity they chose.
They struggle with the societies flawed vision of one’s sex and gender being determined upon their birth. The individuals face unnecessary insults and hate for changing their gender-identity to better suit them. The backlash isn’t always verbal with many individuals being physically harmed. The struggles of the transgender community are unspeakable, the harassment, ignorance, and bullying are just a few things they face. Being harassed by peers in school for using the restroom of their gender-identity.
This debate isn’t only dominant in school, but as well as our society. Society fails to acknowledge these individuals for who they are and forces them to conform to fit the morals of others. The debate on transgender students use of school bathrooms is only the tip of an iceberg. Yet, such a massive discussion that fails to reach a resolution. Individuals are forced to use bathrooms based upon their sex rather than the identity they would like to be defined by.
The government has taken authority and enforced rules that force the transgender community against its morals. Transgender individuals are robbed of their right to use the proper restroom of their choice. Having their gender-identity be a label with no rights. Individuals should have the freedom to use a public bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. The Department of Education appears oblivious to the discrimination transgender students face. Ignoring their pleas for help and asserting nothing is wrong is a childish act. I disagree with the opinions expressed by the article; the Department of Education’s behavior not only encourages discrimination but also makes it harder for transgender students to be open. Our society has a history of discrimination, from slavery and racial injustice, to the denial of LGBTQ rights today. This bias persists, and laws that restrict transgender rights exacerbate the problem.
The Department of Education has failed to see transgender students as individuals deserving equal rights. A transgender student should be able to use the bathroom of their gender identity without facing stigma or legal obstacles. Legal frameworks that restrict this freedom are a form of exclusion and discrimination. Laws that enforce gender-specific bathrooms based on sex at birth deny transgender individuals their right to express their gender identity freely. As a policymaker, I would advocate for policies that uphold the rights of transgender students, ensuring access to gender-appropriate facilities without discrimination.
Introducing and strictly enforcing inclusive legislation, such as comprehensive nondiscrimination laws, is essential. Education campaigns to promote awareness and understanding of gender diversity would contribute to societal acceptance. Schools should implement policies that protect transgender students from bullying and harassment, fostering safe environments. These measures would not only improve the mental well-being of transgender individuals but also reflect our societal commitment to equality and human rights. Ultimately, my goal would be to build a society where individual rights are respected, and diversity is celebrated rather than condemned.
