The rapid ageing of China’s population presents significant challenges to the country’s healthcare system and social infrastructure. With advancements in healthcare, life expectancy in China has increased markedly over recent decades. According to the World Bank, China's average life expectancy rose from approximately 35 years in 1950 to around 77 years in 2020 (World Bank, 2021). This demographic shift has led to an increase in age-related health issues and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. As the population ages, disabilities associated with mobility and cognitive decline become more prevalent, placing additional pressure on healthcare services and social support systems (Li & colleagues, 2019).

The long life expectancy has contributed to a rising economic burden due to increased healthcare costs, pensions, and social care needs for older adults (Zhang & Liu, 2020). The shift towards older age groups affects employment as many aging workers retire later or face workforce shortages, impacting economic productivity. Traditional family support structures are also transforming; urbanization and increased participation of women in the workforce have diminished the role of familial caregiving, prompting a demand for formal care services (Chen & Wang, 2018).

Overall, China’s aging population presents complex challenges that require strategic policy responses to ensure the health, well-being, and socio-economic stability of older adults. Addressing these issues involves integrating healthcare innovations, social support reforms, and community-based care models to adapt to the evolving needs of an aging population (Yang et al., 2020).
