Throughout Week 2’s readings, videos, and assessments, several strategies and insights have been provided to enhance interview performance, including the importance of preparation, communication skills, and self-awareness. Reflecting upon this knowledge, I recognize three specific areas for improvement in my interview skills: mastering virtual interview technology, articulating my strengths and weaknesses confidently, and handling behavioral questions with greater depth.
1. Mastering Virtual Interview Technology
One of the first challenges I need to address is ensuring smooth virtual interviews. Given the rise of remote work, virtual interviews have become increasingly common, and technical issues can undermine the impression I make. Based on the videos and readings, I learned the importance of testing my equipment beforehand—checking internet connectivity, camera and microphone functionality, and a distraction-free environment. For example, during a mock virtual interview exercise, I experienced lag and background noise, which distracted the interviewer and affected my confidence. I believe I struggle in this area because I have not yet fully established a routine for technical preparation. To improve, I plan to run technical checks at least 30 minutes before my scheduled interview and create a dedicated, quiet space for virtual meetings.
2. Confidently Articulating My Strengths and Weaknesses
Another area for improvement is my ability to talk about my strengths and weaknesses effectively.
