The chosen issue for this project is "Use of force complaints" in the criminal justice system. Use of force refers to the actions taken by law enforcement officers to control or subdue individuals during their duties. These actions can range from verbal commands to the use of physical force, and in some cases, deadly force. The key concern with use of force complaints is whether the force applied was appropriate and within constitutional boundaries, or whether it was excessive, cruel, or unnecessary, leading to potential violations of suspects' rights.
In recent years, incidents involving the excessive use of force have garnered widespread media attention and sparked national debates on police accountability and reform. Several high-profile cases have revealed patterns of disproportionate force against minorities, prompting calls for systemic change within law enforcement agencies. These issues are especially significant because they influence public trust, affect policy decisions, and shape the actions and training of criminal justice professionals.
I selected this issue because of my personal and professional interest in criminal justice accountability. Personally, I am concerned about ensuring that law enforcement officers uphold constitutional rights and use force judiciously. Professionally, understanding and addressing the root causes of excessive force complaints is vital for promoting ethical policing practices, enhancing community relations, and driving policy reforms that protect both officers and citizens. Moreover, with many cases being filed against officers today, it is crucial to examine this issue for better oversight and accountability within the criminal justice system.
In my career, I aim to contribute to fostering a fair and just criminal justice environment. Recognizing the importance of proper use of force policies and effective training can assist law enforcement agencies in reducing complaints and ensuring that officers act within legal standards. Consequently, this issue holds personal significance as I aspire to work within a system that values integrity and justice.
