The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to reflect on selected RN-BSN competencies acquired through the NUR4636 course.

This assignment provides documentation of the student’s ability to meet the following course outcomes:

  • The students will be able to recognize the different levels of prevention and apply them in the community.
  • This course will enable the student to place in practice methods of health prevention, promotion, and restoration in the communities.
  • The students will be able to educate the communities about the different ways to prevent illness and promote health.
  • The student will understand the different tools available to put in place and in the hands of the communities in order to keep them healthy.

This reflection will focus on four key competencies that I have developed: demonstrating knowledge of healthcare policy; describing how healthcare is organized and financed; examining legislative and regulatory processes relevant to healthcare provision; and advocating for consumers and the nursing profession.

First, during this course, I learned to recognize the complexities of healthcare policy, finance, and regulatory environments. Understanding local, state, national, and even global trends has broadened my perspective on how these factors affect patient care and health systems. For example, the readings emphasized the importance of staying informed about healthcare legislation and funding models that influence the accessibility and quality of healthcare services (AACN, 2008). This knowledge empowers me to advocate effectively for system improvements, particularly in underserved communities.

Second, the organization and financing of healthcare are subjects that I previously found daunting, but this course has clarified these concepts significantly. I learned about various healthcare delivery models and their implications for patient care, particularly regarding business principles, such as cost factors for patients and systems. For instance, understanding capitation and fee-for-service models has helped me appreciate the trade-offs between cost containment and quality of care.
