Dr. Eric Hickey’s career path, his research, and work as a consultant really fascinated me. As I was trying to determine what I wanted to get a master’s degree in I considered the career area I’m most familiar with, law enforcement. After listening to the video provided in the materials, Dr. Hickey’s path really resonates with me, and it has encouraged me more that I chose the correct master’s program as it will relate to my future career.

Currently, I have applied for a position as a criminal investigator and from this week’s learning resources, I’ve learned that this path can help in my career as a criminal investigator. I have worked as a criminal investigator in the past, but this study will allow me to hone my skills and knowledge so that I can be better in my profession. Looking at the Learning Resources it appears there are many different career opportunities that are available to be pursued should a job opening be available. A consultant for prosecution or defense cases was something that I was not familiar with before reading through Learning Resources. I learned of career opportunities as a crime analyst and learned they gather, analyze, or evaluate data from sources to predict or prevent crimes based on the information accessible to them (O*net OnLine, 2024).

This career path makes earning this degree more important in terms of self-fulfillment and professional accomplishment. Higher education as a criminal investigator creates credibility when implementing different techniques for solving complex investigations. As mentioned earlier I applied for a criminal investigations position, I believe this degree with influence my work in a positive manner to which I can build better cases against an offender. As well as understand their behavior and reason behind the crime they committed. I could see me being a criminal investigator for a long time then retiring after I feel that my work has been completed.
