One notable case is the 2017 complaint filed by the U.S. Department of Education against Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida. The case centered on allegations that the district had failed to provide adequate supports and services to students with disabilities, particularly those with emotional and behavioral disorders, violating the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The district's failure to implement appropriate individualized education programs (IEPs) and provide necessary behavioral interventions led to significant educational harm for students, including missed educational opportunities and increased disciplinary actions.
This case resulted in corrective actions mandated by the Department of Education, requiring Miami-Dade to improve training for special education staff, ensure proper implementation of IEPs, and enhance data collection on student progress.
