As a surgical nurse, my practice aligns closely with the theories of Imogene King's Theory of Goal Attainment. King's theory emphasizes the importance of nurse-patient communication and collaborative goal setting, which is integral in surgical care where patients often experience anxiety and require targeted education and support (Younas et al., 2020). The theory advocates for mutual goal-setting processes that facilitate patient engagement and adherence to post-operative instructions, thereby improving outcomes. In the fast-paced surgical environment, this theory underscores the significance of understanding each patient’s unique needs and fostering effective communication, which aligns with my daily nursing practice.
Furthermore, Virginia Henderson's Need Theory resonates with my role, as it emphasizes assisting patients in achieving independence in their care. Surgical nurses often support patients in regaining physical and emotional independence post-surgery by providing education, support, and interventions tailored to individual needs (Kozier & Erb, 2019). Henderson’s focus on holistic care complements the technical skills needed in surgery, ensuring patients' physical, psychological, and social well-being are addressed.
Regarding Nightingale's assertion that nursing is both an art and a science, I agree wholeheartedly.
