Academic integrity refers to the ethical standards and honesty that students are expected to uphold in their academic work, including the prohibition of cheating and plagiarism. When I began my program, I wish I had fully understood the importance of proper citation and the various forms of plagiarism, which can be unintentional yet still academically dishonest. Upholding academic integrity influences my approach to writing assignments by encouraging me to attribute sources correctly and develop original ideas, thus maintaining honesty in my work. The most common reasons students plagiarize include lack of understanding about proper citation, time pressures, and insufficient knowledge of the material. To avoid plagiarism, effective note-taking strategies such as paraphrasing information in my own words, clearly distinguishing between my thoughts and sources, and keeping detailed records of sources can be very helpful, ensuring that I properly attribute all referenced material and maintain academic honesty.
