For this assignment, I have chosen three topics that not only pique my interest but also hold significant societal relevance: the taxation of alcohol and tobacco, the use of instant replay in sports, and the legal treatment of minors who commit violent crimes. Each of these topics has particular implications that merit thorough exploration, and understanding the reasons for choosing them, the intended audiences, and preliminary thesis statements is essential in guiding future research and writing efforts.

Topic 1: Should taxes on alcohol and tobacco be increased to help pay for rising healthcare costs?

The first topic centers around public health policy and fiscal strategy concerning increased taxation on alcohol and tobacco products. I selected this topic because of its direct impact on public health, government revenue, and societal behavior. As alcohol and tobacco use are linked to numerous health problems, including chronic diseases and addiction, raising taxes could serve as an effective deterrent while generating funds to address healthcare costs. The audience for this topic includes policymakers, public health advocates, and economically minded citizens who are interested in understanding the balance between fiscal policy and health outcomes. A preliminary thesis statement is: “Increasing taxes on alcohol and tobacco can be an effective strategy to reduce consumption, improve public health, and generate essential revenue for healthcare systems.”

Topic 2: Should the instant replay used in the NFL be applied to other sports?

The second topic involves the use of technology in sports officiating. I chose this topic because of my interest in sports technology and fairness in competitive play.
