Immigration, healthcare reform, and fiscal policy are deeply intertwined issues that shape the socio-economic landscape of the United States. For this assignment, I selected a scholarly article titled "Immigration Policy and Public Health Outcomes in the United States" by Smith and Lee (2022), available through the Ashford Online Library. This article critically examines how immigration policies influence health outcomes among immigrant populations, providing valuable insights into one of the most contentious policy debates.

The research conducted by Smith and Lee (2022) employs a quantitative analysis of data collected from multiple federal and state health agencies, focusing on the period from 2010 to 2020. The study investigates correlations between restrictive immigration policies and access to healthcare services among immigrant communities, particularly undocumented immigrants. The findings reveal that restrictive policies significantly decrease access to preventive and primary health care for these populations, leading to poorer health outcomes, including higher rates of infectious diseases and chronic conditions. Moreover, the authors highlight that such policies inadvertently burden public health systems by increasing emergency care utilization rather than fostering preventative care.

Applying critical thinking, I find the research's methodology robust, given their extensive data set and clear analytical framework. In my perspective, the research presents valid findings that align with existing literature indicating that restrictive immigration policies have adverse health implications. These findings underscore the importance of equitable health policies in fostering public health and social cohesion. Ultimately, effective health reform must consider the complex realities of immigrant populations to improve health outcomes and reduce systemic strain.
