Role of assumptions in research studies and examples

In any research study, assumptions serve as foundational beliefs or premises that researchers accept as true without direct evidence or validation within the scope of their study. These assumptions are essential because they help define the parameters of the research, simplify complex phenomena, and establish a common understanding that facilitates data collection and interpretation. For example, in studies investigating the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments for substance use disorders, researchers often assume that the medications used are administered consistently and that participants adhere to treatment protocols. Such assumptions underpin the validity of their findings, as they presume that external factors like compliance or precise medication dosage do not vary significantly among participants (Douaihy, Kelly, & Sullivan, 2013). Another example is assuming that the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder are applied uniformly across different clinical settings, which allows researchers to compare results across studies. However, unwarranted or unexamined assumptions can introduce bias or misinterpretation, making it vital for researchers to transparently state their assumptions and, if possible, test or control for them during their research process (Hammond & Gray, 2016). Thus, assumptions act as the underlying scaffolding of research, guiding study design and influencing the reliability and applicability of conclusions.
