This document is to provide you with guidance on a few things and to alleviate any confusion with the information that you need to be successful with the Week 1 assignment, provide an overview of the Riordan Manufacturing Information systems. The first part of this Document is designed to provide you with the navigation steps to get to the Riordan Manufacturing web and locate the descriptions of the information systems. The second part of this document provides you with definitions and guidance on what you are supposed to be looking at in order to complete your assignment.
Part I
You are being asked to provide an overview of the information systems of the manufacturing company, which means that you need to research this company. The company itself is a fictitious company that was created for you by the University for this assignment. You are required to research the company in the links that are provided and answer the questions that are put forth in the assignment. The navigation to the company information is as follows: When you navigate to the assignment for week 1, the web provided to you will appear as depicted below in figure 1. Click on the link under Student Materials.

Once you click on the link, you will be taken to a page that contains fictitious organizations for many other classes for UoP. You need to locate Riordan Manufacturing, which is located under the “Businesses” link in the upper right hand toolbar, as depicted in figure 2. Select “Businesses” and then “Riordan Manufacturing”.

Once you select Riordan Manufacturing, you will be taken to another webpage that contains the information you are looking for with this assignment (Figure 4). It is on this that you have to research the information for each of the business units by navigating to each and reading the information. On each, there are descriptions of the information systems of the company as a whole.

In the upper right hand corner, there are two links that will give you more information about the company. Figure 4 shows the initial for Riordan Manufacturing; the upper right hand corner has two links, Intranet and Internet. Intranet is the internal network; select this link to find information about the information systems of each business unit.
Once you select the “Intranet” link, you will be supplied with the image shown in Figure 5.

Figure 6 shows what this information looks like, and it can help you understand the descriptions of the technologies.

Part II
You are being asked to provide an overview of the information systems for the company. An information system in this case is broadly defined as “tools for storing, managing, using and gathering data and communications in an organization.” The Riordan web has links across the top of the figure 8.

Each of the business units has an overview that discusses their information systems, but the “Information System” link provides an overview of the network diagrams. Under this section, there are pictures that show the servers and other network appliances that make up Riordan’s network, as depicted in figure 9.

Identifying the different information systems will require you to research what each component does, how they are used, and implications if they cease to function. For example, the Win Exchange Server depicted in the diagram is an email server for the organization. Similar information exists for each business unit, and your task is to review this information, provide an overview, choose one specific system, and answer questions about its function, importance, and potential issues.
