This semester, my objective has been to give you exposure to contemporary dance practices in the 21st Century, from warm up to performance. The warm up has focused on concepts such as head/tail connection, contraction/release of the spine (cat/cow stretch), core work, lengthening of the sides of the body, balance/stabilization and extension from the core to the periphery of the body. You have been given movement combinations to explore rhythm, use of space, weight, relationship to others, dynamics approaches to movement and body shapes. You have also been asked to improvise and create your own movement based on your own preferences and movement repertoire. In our class choreography, we have used social dance (swing) and jazz/hip hop movements within a contemporary dance context.
Please read through this article that discusses the development of what we now call contemporary dance. For your final writing assignment, please write a reflection paper sharing what you learned this semester about contemporary dance. Include 1) what you may have learned about your body in the warm-up or in the dances (what was helpful, what was challenging, what was new information). 2) How was the choreography created in class reflective of how contemporary dance is practiced today (please refer to the article and your own experiences). Share your experiences in learning/creating this choreography Requirements of the paper are two pages, double spaced, 12pt font, 1" margin.

Throughout this semester, my exploration of contemporary dance has deepened my understanding of both the discipline and my own physical capabilities. The warm-up exercises served as a foundational aspect of my learning, allowing me to connect more deeply with my body and its movements. Engaging in activities such as the head/tail connection and contraction/release of the spine was particularly helpful, as these concepts enhanced my awareness of alignment and helped me access a full range of motion. The cat/cow stretch, for instance, improved my spinal flexibility and provided a gentle way to warm up my core muscles. I found that lengthening the sides of my body and stabilizing my balance were initially challenging but eventually became integral to my movement practice. These exercises introduced me to new ways of perceiving my body's capabilities, fostering a sense of embodiment that was often absent before.
In the process of creating and learning choreography, I observed that contemporary dance today is highly reflective of personal expression and improvisation, aligning with the insights from the article. The integration of social dance forms such as swing and hip hop within contemporary contexts demonstrates the fluid boundaries between genres and emphasizes movement versatility. These elements encouraged me to approach choreography more freely, emphasizing exploration and improvisation rather than strict adherence to classical forms. The class activities were designed to promote improvisation, inspiring me to experiment with movement combinations and generate my own sequences based on my preferences and repertoire. This process not only enhanced my creativity but also fostered a deeper understanding of how movement can be shaped by individual experiences and cultural influences.
Learning and creating choreography in this manner expanded my perspective on how contemporary dance operates today. It is less about rigid technique and more about a dialogue between the dancer and their environment, including space, music, and other dancers. The use of improvisation as a tool for movement creation was particularly impactful, allowing me to discover new ways of expressing emotion and storytelling. This approach resonates with current practices, where dancers are encouraged to forge personal connections with their movement and to challenge traditional notions of dance authority.
Overall, this semester has been an enlightening journey into contemporary dance, emphasizing body awareness, improvisation, and genre blending. The exercises and choreography have not only improved my technical skills but also enriched my understanding of dance as an expressive art form. I now see dance as a dynamic and customizable form of self-expression, capable of conveying complex narratives and emotions. Moving forward, I am inspired to continue exploring these principles beyond the classroom, integrating movement practices into my daily life and possibly pursuing further studies in dance.
