This week has been particularly enlightening as I deepen my understanding of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and its vital role within my current work environment in a memory care unit. Engaging with the principles of EBP has reinforced the importance of integrating the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences to improve resident outcomes. My interactions with colleagues have highlighted that institutional support for evidence-based protocols exists, especially regarding the management of neurodegenerative symptoms, which encourages a culture of continuous quality improvement (QI). For instance, implementing non-pharmacological interventions rooted in EBP has shown promising results in reducing agitation among residents, showcasing the direct impact of applying evidence to practice.

However, several barriers hinder the full integration of EBP within my practice setting. These include limited access to the latest research articles due to time constraints and insufficient staff training on research appraisal skills. Additionally, resistance to change among staff sometimes impedes the adoption of new practice protocols, which underscores the need for ongoing education and leadership support. As a future Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP), I see my role in research as pivotal in advocating for and translating evidence into clinical practice. I aim to contribute to the development and refinement of care models tailored for mental health and cognitive impairments, helping to bridge the gap between research findings and clinical application. My professional journey in a memory care setting provides a unique vantage point to influence the integration of psychiatric research into holistic, person-centered care, ultimately enhancing quality and outcomes for residents with neurocognitive disorders.
