Your Leadership Profile Do you believe you have the traits to be an effective leader? Perhaps you are already in a supervisory role, but as has been discussed previously, appointment does not guarantee leadership skills. How can you evaluate your own leadership skills and behaviors? You can start by analyzing your performance in specific areas of leadership. In this Discussion, you will complete Gallup’s StrengthsFinder assessment.

This assessment will identify your personal strengths, which have been shown to improve motivation, engagement, and academic self-conference. Through this assessment, you will discover your top five themes—which you can reflect upon and use to leverage your talents for optimal success and examine how the results relate to your leadership traits. To Prepare: Complete the StrengthsFinder assessment instrument, per the instructions found in this Module's Learning Resources. Please Note: This Assessment will take roughly 30 minutes to complete. NOTE: Please keep your report.

Effective leadership hinges not merely on positional authority but heavily relies on personal traits and developmental areas that constitute an individual’s leadership capacity. To assess my own leadership profile, I undertook Gallup’s StrengthsFinder assessment, a tool designed to identify personal strengths that influence motivation, engagement, and overall effectiveness. The results from this assessment reveal my top five themes, which serve as a foundation for understanding my inherent leadership qualities and areas for growth.

My top five strengths include Achiever, Learner, Relator, Responsibility, and Strategic. The Achiever theme highlights my intrinsic motivation to accomplish tasks and continuously improve my performance. As a leader, this trait fosters persistence and dedication, motivating team members to meet goals efficiently. The Learner strength demonstrates my curiosity and commitment to self-improvement, qualities vital for adaptive leadership in dynamic environments. The Relator theme signifies that I value deep relationships, which enhances trust and collaboration within teams. Responsibility indicates that I am dependable, taking ownership of my actions and commitments—crucial for earning credibility as a leader. Lastly, Strategic reflects my ability to see various options and develop effective plans, an essential trait for guiding teams through complex challenges.

From these results, two core values resonate deeply with my leadership style: integrity and growth. Integrity aligns with the Responsibility strength; it underscores the importance of honesty, ethical behavior, and accountability, fostering trust with colleagues and team members. Growth complements the Learner theme, emphasizing the importance of continuous development and adaptability—traits necessary for sustained leadership effectiveness.

Regarding areas for improvement, I aim to strengthen two specific characteristics: emotional intelligence and delegation skills. Emotional intelligence is vital for understanding and managing my own emotions as well as empathizing with others, thereby improving interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution—key components of effective leadership. Developing this skill can foster a more inclusive and supportive team environment. Delegation, on the other hand, is an area where I wish to bolster my confidence and competence. Effective delegation not only increases efficiency but also empowers team members, encourages professional development, and builds trust. Improving in this area will enable me to focus more on strategic initiatives rather than getting bogged down in operational details.

Overall, the StrengthsFinder assessment provides valuable insights into my innate qualities that can be harnessed to enhance my leadership efficacy. Recognizing my strengths allows me to leverage them deliberately, while identifying growth areas offers targeted avenues for development. For instance, I plan to seek leadership development opportunities that enhance emotional intelligence, such as emotional intelligence workshops, and practice delegation by gradually entrusting more responsibilities to capable team members. By intentionally developing these traits, I can evolve into a more well-rounded leader capable of inspiring and guiding others effectively.
