BIS551 Semester’s Project: Business Intelligence And Data ✓ Solved

BIS551 Semester’s Project BIS551 Business Intelligence and Data

In this project, groups (three students) will choose a company that uses Business Intelligence to help decision making (Decision making at any level of the company; managerial, executive, operational etc.). You may also choose a company that is currently not using Business Intelligence (discuss with the lecturer before you go ahead with such company). You are strongly advised to choose a small company because of time limitation of the project (one semester). The objectives of the project are:

  1. To understand the company’s weaknesses. You have to ensure if the company uses BI how, why, and what it is used for. In other words, how the company benefits from its BI system for its decision-making process.
  2. To critically analyze the company’s data and the statistical methods used, whether they are using data mining or any other techniques to mine the data.
  3. To provide recommendations and improvements.

In this part of your project, you have to rely on your topics of study during the semester to provide a list of recommendations and/or improvements to the current system at the company.

This information you can process and target those specific customers. Based on the above descriptions, what you have to do and what are the deliverables are:

  1. You have to choose a small company.
  2. Find out the BI system used to help in decision making.
  3. Do an analysis of the use of the BI system, its use, who it supports, and how it is working.
  4. Choose only one level of supported users of the BI system, for example, manager’s level or operational staff level etc.
  5. Clearly describe the use of the BI at the level in (4) and the reports produced.
  6. Find out if Data Mining is a technique used along with the BI system or any other mining technique.
  7. Give examples from the databases used in the company by the BI system.
  8. Find out any issues or problems in the current BI system.
  9. Report on these issues and problems.
  10. Provide your own recommendations to ensure a better BI system and better decision making. Support your recommendation with evidence.
  11. Your project should not exceed 3500 words.

Paper For Above Instructions

In the realm of Business Intelligence (BI), the strategic use of data is paramount for companies seeking to enhance their decision-making processes. This paper will analyze how a small company, XYZ Corporation, effectively employs BI systems to facilitate management decisions at an operational level, subsequently leading to better outcomes.

Company Overview: XYZ Corporation

XYZ Corporation is a small retail business specializing in eco-friendly products. The company has traditionally relied on manual processes for its operations; however, it is now transitioning to utilizing BI tools to streamline decision-making and enhance customer engagement.

Business Intelligence System in Use

XYZ Corporation has recently implemented a cloud-based BI solution, Tableau, which enables the visualization of sales data and customer interactions. This system allows the managerial team to track sales performance in real-time, understand customer preferences, and make informed product decisions.

Analysis of the BI System

The BI system at XYZ Corporation supports various levels of management, particularly the operational staff who are responsible for daily sales activities. The BI tool provides user-friendly dashboards that display key performance indicators (KPIs), such as sales volume, customer demographics, and product performance metrics. This real-time data helps staff make immediate operational adjustments, such as increasing the stock of high-demand products or launching targeted promotions for specific customer segments.

Focus on Operational Staff

Focusing on the operational staff as the primary users of the BI system highlights the significant impact BI has on day-to-day functions. For example, operational reports generated by the BI tool allow staff to anticipate stock requirements and optimize inventory levels. A monthly sales report detailing customer purchase patterns enables staff to adjust marketing strategies promptly, fostering a proactive approach to customer outreach.

Data Mining Techniques

Alongside BI, XYZ Corporation employs data mining techniques to enhance their analytical capabilities. Predictive analytics is utilized to identify trends based on historical sales data, allowing the company to forecast future sales accurately. This predictive modeling empowers the operational staff to make data-driven decisions that align with customer demands.

Database Utilization

The BI system leverages various databases, including customer relationship management (CRM) systems which consolidate customer data. This integration aids in identifying repeat customers and tailoring marketing campaigns to maximize engagement. It also enables sales forecasting based on previous buying behaviors, which is crucial for managing stock and financial planning.

Current Issues in the BI System

Despite the advantages, XYZ Corporation faces challenges with its BI system. One significant issue is the lack of integrated data sources, causing discrepancies in reporting. The operational staff has expressed concerns regarding the usability of the BI dashboards, citing a steep learning curve for new employees. Additionally, there is a need for more advanced training sessions to maximize the tool's potential.

Recommendations for Improvement

To enhance the efficiency of the BI system and improve decision-making processes at XYZ Corporation, several recommendations are proposed:

  • Integration of Data Sources: Unifying disparate data sources will provide a comprehensive view of company performance, ensuring consistent reporting.
  • User Training Programs: Instituting regular training sessions on the use of BI tools can empower staff to leverage the full potential of the system.
  • Enhanced User Interface: Collaborating with BI providers to simplify the dashboard layout will improve user experience, making it more intuitive for operational staff to access key metrics.
  • Incorporating Real-time Analytics: Implementing real-time analytics capabilities can allow staff to respond to market changes more promptly.
  • Feedback Mechanism: Establishing a continuous feedback loop from users can aid in identifying technical issues and ensuring continual improvement of the BI system.

Conclusion

In conclusion, XYZ Corporation's utilization of Business Intelligence has significantly impacted its decision-making capabilities, particularly at the operational level. By analyzing the current system's efficacy, the organization can identify areas for improvement, establishing not only a robust BI framework but also a commitment to data-driven decision-making. Enhancing the BI system through integration, training, and user feedback can foster an environment where informed decisions lead to sustained company growth.
