Write a 2-page paper describing what else you would like to learn this semester, including how you would like to hone your skills (listening, analysis, writing, etc.), what kinds of content you would like to focus on (Westerns? Musicals? Animated Films? Movies with Female Protagonists? Movies in Languages other than English?), and examples of films and/or activities that would meet these goals. Give justification for your choices. This should be a chance for you to reflect on what you have learned so far this semester as well as an opportunity to shape the remainder of the semester along with your classmates.

As the semester progresses, I find myself increasingly eager to expand my understanding of cinema and enhance my analytical and interpretative skills through exploring new genres, themes, and cultural contexts. My primary goal for the remainder of the semester is to deepen my appreciation of diverse cinematic expressions while honing specific skills such as critical listening, detailed film analysis, and refined academic writing. I believe that actively engaging with a broader spectrum of content will not only enrich my cinematic literacy but also build a more nuanced perspective on the cultural and artistic elements embedded in films.
First, I aim to develop my listening skills further, particularly in understanding dialogues across various dialects and languages. To achieve this, I wish to focus on films in languages other than English, such as French, Japanese, or Spanish. Watching foreign-language films with subtitles will enhance my ability to comprehend different accents, colloquialisms, and cultural references, thereby broadening my linguistic and cultural horizons. For example, I am particularly interested in exploring Japanese anime films and French cinema, which have unique stylistic qualities and storytelling techniques that differ from mainstream Hollywood productions. Engaging with these films will make me more adept at capturing subtle nuances in pronunciation, tone, and emotional expression, skills that are vital for comprehensive film analysis.
Secondly, I am keen on sharpening my analytical skills by examining different genres such as musicals, animated films, and movies featuring strong female protagonists. Exploring musicals like Singin’ in the Rain and The Greatest Showman will deepen my understanding of how music intertwines with narrative to evoke emotions and develop characters. Similarly, studying animated films like Spirited Away and Inside Out can reveal how animation techniques contribute to storytelling and audience engagement. Focusing on movies with female protagonists, such as Wonder Woman or Little Women, will allow me to analyze representations of gender, empowerment, and identity in contemporary cinema. These genres and themes are chosen because of their cultural significance and their potential to challenge traditional storytelling norms, which I find intellectually stimulating.
Third, I intend to improve my writing skills by engaging in more detailed and structured film critiques and essays. This will involve not only analyzing narrative elements, cinematography, sound, and editing but also articulating these insights clearly and persuasively in well-organized essays. I believe that honing this skill will enable me to communicate complex ideas effectively and contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions and scholarly debates.
In addition, I want to participate in activities such as film screenings, discussions, and perhaps even a mini research project on a genre or director I am less familiar with. For example, attending a local film festival featuring international or independent films could provide firsthand exposure to different cinematic aesthetics and storytelling approaches. Group discussions with classmates on the thematic and technical aspects of selected films will help me see different perspectives and refine my analytical thinking.
My choices are justified by the desire to cultivate a more holistic understanding of global cinema and improve my technical and interpretative skills. Understanding foreign-language films will improve my cultural literacy and listening comprehension, which are crucial in an increasingly interconnected world. Exploring varied genres will allow me to appreciate the artistic diversity and innovative storytelling techniques that define cinema’s evolution. Focusing on films with strong female leads will contribute to a broader discourse around gender representation, a pertinent issue in contemporary media. Furthermore, improving my writing skills will prepare me for academic pursuits and enable me to produce compelling and thoughtful analyses.
